When we learn a language, there are four skills that we need for complete communication. When we learn our native language, we usually learn to listen first, then to speak, then to read, and finally to write. These are called the four "language skills"

Language educators have long used the concepts of four basic language skills: Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing

The four basic skills are related to each other by two parameters: the mode of communication: oral or written the direction of communication: receiving or producing the message We may represent the relationships among the skills in the following chart:

Language skills incorporate listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children begin learning language skills from birth and continue well into adulthood. Nearly any activity can teach young children language skills as they are still learning basics like what objects are called and how to respond to questions. So merely talking to your child as you walk through the grocery store or asking her about what she is playing can improve language skills. As children become ready to move into reading and writing skills, however, more targeted activities are necessary.
