4-H Personal Statement
“As a true 4-H’er, I pledge my Heart to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world”(4-H Pledge). Being a 4-H member for 10 years, I can proudly say that nothing has taught me more than the program of 4-H. 4-H is a youth development program that focuses on agriculture, public speaking, engineering, technology, science and youth leadership for kids ages 5-19. 4-H has been around for one hundred and eleven years but in today’s society, very few people know what it is. I have grown up around animals and 4-H, learned many life lessons, responsibility, how to have friendly competition with people i have grown up with.

The 4-H Program has helped to prepare me for a secondary education by teaching me life long skills, skills like knowing how to manage difficult situations, having the ability to seek out resources and the ability to think critically. In college there will be times when I have to be able to manage difficult situations. I will be able to do this by using critical thinking strategies I have learned throughout the 12 years I've been in 4H. The solution is not always obtainable on ones own, but like I have also learned I don't have to do everything on my own so I will use my resources to be able to concur my challenges.…

When my grand-uncle died, hundreds of people came to his funeral. Many were former patients; they spoke of how gracious my grand-uncle was. He changed the lives of many people by caring for those who could not afford healthcare. Before I die, I want to better the lives of as many people possible by developing cheap and accessible treatments. HLI’s Student Week provides the chance to utilize theoretical knowledge from scientific articles, AP sciences, and independent studies in practical application. Since the field I am passionate about pursuing is pathology, HLI’s focus on life sciences at a molecular level would be the most beneficial program for me as I would be learning how medical professionals research in a laboratory. From the skills…

Being a leader in 4-H, I have taken on many roles to make the 4-H experience a memorable and very enjoyable. One of my more recent projects was creating a six week Cloverbud Science Club. After school, the cloverbuds in the Perham School District would come to the Science Club and learn various science topics including space, water, and chemistry. I prepared the lesson, taught, and cleaned up. Besides teaching, I became a quick problem solver when it came to a conflict. I learned how long the youth could focus on a project and how to explain the results from their experiments. This science program was the first taste of 4-H many of these students had, but it made their 4-H experience a fun and memorable journey. By implementing these programs,…

4-H teaches life lessons and gives kids good morals. 4-H lessons and positive outcomes can be proven through emotions and responsibilities. Many people think 4-H develops kids to become killers because of the animals being raised to go straight to the slaughter once they are at the right weight. What these people don’t know is that 4-H is not just animals or slaughtering. 4-H has many different activities involved in the program. 4-H offers activities such as baking, science projects, leaderships skills, band, showing animals and many more enjoyable activities. Even if kids show animals through 4-H it does not make them become killers. 4-H allows children to learn how to care for and love different aspects of their lives.…

The vision of work that I have with children 5 years from now is to teach for a while then transfer into the role of a Program Coordinator to help design additional instructional and interactive materials for birth to Pre-K candidates that will help enhance their cognitive, social, reasoning, conception, fine and gross motor skills. I plan on developing technology or assessment tools that will allow teachers to help their students better understand different concepts or performing acts. I want the material draw interest of the candidate in which they will be involved and will not lose interest. In order for this to happen I plan on using the resources around me such as DPI, Smartstart services, and/or providing a survey to educators and…

“You will never be the same. That’s a promise.” I was firstly touched by these words when I discovered MHC. I have always pursued uniqueness, whether when I practiced dancing skills painstakingly to become an elegant dancer, or persisted in community service during high school years to help ASD children and students with mental and financial issues. I found that being able to test my limits and actively engaging in supporting groups and communities were basis of uniqueness.…

Many people think that to work in a computer related field, I only need to have a degree in computer science or information systems. Although a degree in one of these will prepare me for most of the work involved in those fields, it will not prepare me adequately to be an influential individual in that field. It does not teach me how to work with other people and apply myself to becoming a better thinker and a better person. Entering the HAB program at Xavier University will not limit my potential to a single area of study, but will give me the necessary tools to succeed anywhere.…

My first exposure to occupational therapy came while I was working as an ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapist with a young girl with apraxia. Her speech problems had been linked to a lack of core strength, and we were to begin implementing an exercise routine to increase her strength. To achieve this goal in an enjoyable yet effective way for the child, an occupational therapist was consulted and began teaching us methods that incorporated preferred play activities into her core strengthening program. Running this new program became the highlight of our sessions, for both me and her it seemed. The smiles and giggles had me enjoying my job on a greater level; it was not only entertaining for the child, but a delight for me to implement. It was then I became extremely intrigued about the OT profession, and decided to explore the options the field had to offer. Research and curiosity eventually landed me on various websites and talking to those in the field, gaining knowledge about the different types of therapies and types of needs targeted by occupational therapists. The part that struck me most after all my research: OT is about daily life. It is about the activities that occupy our time, the small obstacles most people tackle each day with ease, obliviously unaware of the magnitude of importance these tiniest of accomplishments can truly encompass. The little everyday challenges in life are often the ones most overlooked, but to those unable or learning to conquer these challenges, their importance is evident. To me, these daily obstacles seemed like the most essential to overcome, small successes that could greatly improve an individual’s quality of life.…

Club, which has taught me a lot of different skills, but the biggest skill that I feel most affected me in learning is taking action. Every year in H.O.P.E. we would decide to raise money and awareness for a different cause. My freshman year we decided to buy life straws for people in need in different countries. We got to witness how the life straws works by putting a lot of dirty water in a container and the drinking it with the life straw. During my sophomore year we decide to get a hydration station for the elementary and middle school kids. I really loved this experience because I still remember how excited the kids were to get their turn on filling up their canteens. It felt really good being able to educate the kids about recycling and using canteens instead of water bottles, so they use less plastic bottles. During junior year we raised money to help give a jungle gym to G3. This year we decided that we wanted to give money to make a well for people that have to walk miles just to get fresh water. The H.O.P.E. Club has really helped me learn that anyone can take action on problems in the world that are big or small. We just have to dedicate time and effort to get things…
