4 Day School Week Essay
In the US, about 43% of schools have a four day school week. There are many concerns on this situation. People don't see most of the effects of this decision. I believe that our schools should remain as is because there is no interference with after school activities, and vacation time is longer, and no economic concerns.

First and foremost, having a 5 day weekend makes the day shorter. In other words, one is released earlier from school. For example, having shorter school days causes classes to be shorter, making students receive less work. Obtaining too much work can cause students to put less effort in their work and there would also be no need to make up any extra days, which takes up more summer time. Attending a certain number of days can expand the amount of summer. Staffs and graduates may have a longer summer break, and they can enjoy their vacation.

Moreover, having students stay in school for more days can help the school meet its needs. A better explanation would be schools would have no problems, economically. To prove the point, students buy snacks, lunch, parking, and materials. Students don't realize how much they help the school pay its bills such as diesel, supplies, and utility payments. If there is a busy schedule between both parents during the day, Fridays off for students will help parents work and not worry about their kids if their kids were to go to a family member's house or sleep over a friend's house. Parents will save money if students go to their family or friends house instead of the parents hiring a baby sitter. A four day school week may come in handy if you have the entire Friday off to schedule appointments with doctors or dentists. If there was a Friday a student was taken out of school to go to the dentist, but the dentist was packed, he would be late to go back to school. Four day school weeks may alter that a little, say on a normal Friday, that the dentist would be full of students, but if there was no school on Friday, then there would be any line to wait in, and no rush to get back to school before school is over. The other upside of having Fridays off is that parents can do errands with out interruptions. If students have Fridays off, they can go to a friend's house so that their parents can run errands without interruption. According to Jami Dow, a mother who moved to Hot Springs, South Dakota ( a district that has a four day school week) three years ago to be closer to her parents, said, "Many families use the extra day to schedule doctor and dentist…

On the other hand, Critics believe that students should be spending more days in school rather than fewer. In fact, in the United States of America many states require school to be in session for a minimum of 180 days, which is almost three weeks less than other developed countries in Europe and Asia. For instance, China and Korea have more than 220 school days (Kingsbury). However, a four day school week will not reduce the time spent in school. It will redistribute the time going to school into four days instead of five days. Therefore the school days will be longer in a four day school week to encompass the correct amount of hours required.…

Some people claim that it will raise scores because of the idea students will be more attentive in school, thus increasing their intellect. Despite these claims, the test scores of students do not significantly increase or decrease. Similar to Beesley and Anderson 's suggestion, it seems that schools save money while maintaining comparable test scores. (The Four-Day School Week: Information and Recommendations, pg. 26). Overall, it seems as though the benefits of a four-day school week are strong enough for it to pull through despite the fact it doesn 't dramatically increase test…

If four day weeks were introduced to schools, the students and schools will both benefit. The schools will save a significant amount of money and students will excel academically and behavior will improve drastically. Whenever we have a student/teacher holiday, less students are absent and behave because they are looking forward to less days of the week. When students have less days to worry about, it will make them work harder so they can finish of the week sooner.…

If students are away from school for a shorter amount of time, they will not forget information and will remember how to work properly. For example, if students are away for a long time, they will forget how to work and act in the school environment. However, if they are not of as long, then they will remember more and act properly in school. Staying in school for longer periods of time will make students get better grades. When students stay in school and work more, they will have more practice and perform better on tests, leading to students obtaining better grades. Finally, with summer break shortened, school life will ultimately improve. With students being in school together for longer time frames, they will have to be around each other longer, and that will cause new friendships to be made and relationships to form. As the old saying goes, “ Friends in high school are friends for life.” Some people say that summer break should not be shortened and school should not go year round. This is wrong because when summer break is shortened and school goes year round, students ultimately benefit because their grades improve and they retain information over the…

This goes to show that since other schools are doing a year round program, their students don’t suffer from the memory loss over the summer. If more schools tried year round schools more of their students would gain more knowledge because they will not forget it and they won’t have to spend time reviewing it. According to Screenflex.com, parents save money from the spread out vacations because they don’t have to pay for summer camps and activities that would normally cost a lot for the parents. This shows that parents will actually save money from all year schooling. This will benefit the amount of chances the child has to do other stuff like sports or carnivals and fairs.…

Many schools in the United States are beginning to change their school calendar so their students attend class all year round. The changes still allow the students time off in the summer, but they do not have the three months of break most students in America receive traditionally. Instead, they get a break of a couple weeks in the summer, and the remainder of the time is divided up and put into other breaks throughout the year. All schools in America should switch to a year-round calendar to accommodate the different and higher level of learning needed to be successful in our changing world and society. The traditional school system was designed many years ago when our country was an agricultural nation. Therefore, the school calendar was developed having a long break in the summer so students could assist their family with cultivating crops and other aspects of farm life. The traditional school calendar was not a calendar for higher learning, and should be extended to meet the needs of modern day students. There are many explanations as to why the traditional school calendar should be changed.…
