Tin shacks, worn shoes, and working in fields is the normality for a majority of Guatemalans. An estimated 75% of the country of Guatemala lives below the poverty line and upon first glance, one will not question this high statistic. In 2013 I traveled to Guatemala on a mission trip and have been back every summer since. Before my first trip I had been told that there was extreme poverty but my version of poverty at the time was a small house, beat up car, and maybe not showering every day. As a person in Guatemala you want to grow and develop. Life is an amazing thing to have protected along with liberty, justice, security, and peace because it helps fulfill the preamble’s statement of your growth because with all of these things protected you can grow and maybe have your chance to fulfill the constitution of your people in government…

Hundreds of families are fleeing from their small villages because an army invaded their land that was once their home. In Guatemala the rise of the civil war and postwar has caused a disruption in the nation and extreme violence. A war that has lasted about 34 years has forced entire villages to migrate and put the nation in a state of genocide. The cause of migration varies because it is believed that there were different factors that contributed to the rise of the war. Authors such as Andrew R. Morrison and Racher A. May in Escape from Terror and Violence and Migration in Post-Revolutionary Guatemala, believe that “the combined effects of political crisis, war, and the economic crisis aggravated by…
