It is quite complicated to incorporate the GAAP criteria to the contract. The contact does not clearly identify what the $5,000,000 fee is for. One can imply that it provides PACE the exclusive rights to show these films in their own theatres. If that was the case then the $5,000,000 is realized when the contract is signed however $2,500,000 is earned at the time of signing the contract and the remainder is not earned until PACE uses these rights for six months. They will recognize it as revenue when it is received in cash. MV-Link has fulfilled its part of the contract. There is another issue with the revenues that are generated under this contract which detail the number of times that PACE reports showing the films. They have been able to…

3M Company, the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, was founded in 1902 by five businessmen. They wanted to make a profit out of minerals for grinding wheel abrasives, but this failed to really take off. Their real success lay in the encouragement towards innovative employees, which resulted in several exclusive products such as waterproof sandpaper and masking tape. The search for new products and innovations became their core business from then on. Despite several failures in the first years 3M continued growing and coming up with new innovative products such as the now famous Scotch tape. In 1929 3M went international as well as traded their first stock and in 1949 they became listed on the New York Stock Exchange [3M Timeline]. By the 1950s it had international sales amounting to $20 million. In 1960 and 1970 it kept growing and released a line of board games which was very successful. They also produced their only traffic signal around this time, one that is still being used today. In the late 1970s the company was involved in some of the first digital audio recordings and in the 1980s it invented the Post-it notes [Haeg 2002]. The company is still growing today and now has over 130 factories employing some 67.000 people. Its international sales increased tenfold since 1950, now amounting to a staggering $22 billion [3M Press Release 2006]. 3M is currently working on focusing on its core businesses and they intend to sell some of their product lines. Their current business model focuses on “the ability to not only develop unique products, but also to manufacture them efficiently and consistently around the…

3M is an innovative and creative company that flourished since 1930 with the invention of masking tape and again in the 1950’s with Scotchgard the fabric protector. Then during a glue that was invented that was considered a failure in the 1970’s someone came up with the idea of taking that glue solution and using it on the back of paper to hold the paper to anything. So the invention of the post-it came out and the business really took off. in the 2000 the newly appointed CEO James McNerney implemented the Six Sigma management style. He did this because he felt the company was stale and not growing as much as he felt. This new management style is “designed to identify problems in work processes, and then use rigorous measurement to reduce variation, eliminate defects, and increase efficiency” (Nelson and Quick, 2011-363). The very things that some believe got 3M were they were, McNerney wanted to streamline the company and eliminate the wastefulness. Initially his idea caused a growth of twenty-two percent annually but not for long. McNerney was committed to Six Sigma and imbedded it deeply into 3M until his departure in 2005.…

Much of 3M’s ethos for and cultivation of innovation and creativity can be attributed to multiple, mutually supporting “layers”: At layer 1, the primary concern is the 3M culture. The official vision statement is “to be the most innovative enterprise in the world”, and 3M’s basic definition is: “new ideas +action or implementation which results in an improvement, gain, or profit”. 3M has also coined the word “inventorpreneur” for those who invent and implement. The culture encourages stubborn persistence amongst employees to accept and promote their ideas - “do your own thing”. The culture is taught and conveyed through stories and myth about 3M inventorpreneurs – supported by initiatives such as 3M Global Ambassador for Innovation, and the Tech Forum –a volunteer organization with administrative support, which sponsors events throughout the year. As a result, employees often seek help, and are seldom refused.…
