A very good morning to our lecturer Sir Elyas, and my fellow classmates. Before I start my presentation topic, think of this: Have you ever thought about, instead of a regular printer printing only thin slices of paper, that one day we would be printing out a whole 3-dimensional object? This is what I am going to talk about today. 3D printing technologies. In this presentation, I am going talk about the engineering technologies behind 3D printing and also its application in various field. So many of you might ask, what is 3D printing? And how is it possible to print out an object that has 3-dimensional shape? Well, if we are talking about a couple of decades ago, it is a dream’s talk. But it is now possible thanks to our fellow engineers. 3D printing is a process of making 3 dimensional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printer object is achieved using a process known as additive process. Through an additive process, the desired object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the entire object is created. It is actually just like printing thin slices of paper, but many layers are printed, and each layer stacks up on top of the previous layer, eventually forming the object itself. This additive process is developed around the year of 2000, and until today, there are several more methodology of printing 3D objects, such as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Fused deposition modeling (FDM) and also Stereolithography (SLA), which prints 3D objects with the concept of fusing small particles of plastics or ceramics into desired shape using high power lasers. So how does 3D printing work? It all actually starts with designing the 3D model via a CAD (computer aided design) file. After which, the CAD file will be converted into a .stl file, in order for the printing software to read it.
