1. Trust: the relationships you’re building with the young people and families are vital. The individuals need to know that we promote and carry out secure procedures to protect confidential information
2. Safety: some information must be kept confidential for safety reasons, however at times a child’s confidentiality can be breeched either by the child and or parent.
3. The law: the law states all written and recorded information is legally bound for 75 years, recording is important as it can be taken to court if requested. Handling information correctly and follow safeguarding procedures.
4. Recording: recording is essential and critical when working in this environment; you need to safeguard yourself and the young person with what ever information is going to be given.

Even though parents, children and practitioners have the right to confidentiality there are some occasions where maintaining confidentiality is not possible and must be broken. If there are concerns over a child’s wellbeing, this must be reported or if you are aware of a criminal offence, you are again obliged to report it to the correct authorities. If confidentiality is broken it must be done in the appropriate way and according to the policies of the setting. It can be a very difficult situation to be in, being made aware of abuse or risk to a child can make it difficult for the staff member, but by reporting any concerns in the correct manner you reduce to risk of further harm or danger to the child but also maintain as much dignity for the child and or family involved. Sometimes in the setting, situations arise where, for example, one child has hurt another and the other children may have seen the incident and made their parents aware and they may want information from you or other staff members; this is a difficult situation because you can’t help children discussing things but you need to remember that you still need to maintain confidentiality and not discuss the matter with anyone besides this child involved parent or carer. Another further area that may cause tension is social networks such as Facebook or Twitter, there are now many problems caused by social networking because information can be passed around extremely quickly and without proper control or authority. It is important that any staff members who use these sites do not use their sites to divulge information or responded to any comments made via these networking sites. If they see any problems they should report it to the settings manager so they can speak to the party or persons involved to stop further problems arising.…

    - so information can be appropriately and necessarily shared between colleagues, parents/carers, different professionals and the child/young person. If there’s an accident or incident at the setting that involves a child, then a practitioner would need to tell the child’s parent. If a parent tells you information regarding the child’s health and development or safety, then the child’s key person or other professionals would need to be told, so that everyone working with the child knows all the information they need to so they can help the child as best as they can.…

Policies and procedures are put into place to protect children and young people but also the adults/staff who work with them in the setting, it is very important that all professionals within the work place follow safe working practices to make sure that not only the children and young people are protected but also themselves and their colleagues. E.g. if a disclosure is made by either a child or young person to a member of the staff within the setting it is vital that the information they have trusted you with is always taken very seriously even if it this is proven to be untrue or partly inaccurate. The child or young person should always be listened to by staff in a calm and supportive manner which will allow them to talk freely, openly and be able to make them feel confident with expressing their views, also another important factor is that they are reassured about telling someone and expressed how hard it must have been for them so they always feel like they can come to you to talk to you when they need to and they don’t ever feel alone, scared or a burden to anyone. Once the disclosure has been made and the child or young person is calm, secure and reassured the employee or adult should inform the designated safeguarding officer straight away, applicable notes should be…
