30 Days: Minimum Wage Video Response
I thought that the video was relatively on point with the difficulties of living off of minimum wage. It demonstrated the difficulties in resisting temptation to buy, the emotional effects of having little or no money, how sometimes no matter how long or hard you work the pay just isn’t enough, etc. I liked that they showed the costs of hospital bills in comparison to the amount of money being brought in from working minimum wage. Living off of minimum wage is not an easy thing to do. One of the biggest issues of living off of minimum wage is not getting enough hours. Making minimum wage is even less than nothing if you’re only working 13 hours a week when you should be working 35 – 40 hours a week. Wages like that don’t even amount to enough a month to pay all your necessary bills in today’s society, let alone have even a dime left to spend on yourself. As trivial as it may seem to spend money on things considered luxuries it’s not always. As shown in the video, having to go through life with no way to go anywhere or do anything luxurious can lead to depression. With our economy so bent out of shape, the price of everything has gone up. It’s causing many companies to go out of business because people can no longer afford their products and without the customers money the companies can’t thrive against their competitors. In the future I plan to attempt to beat out my competitors, not by jacking up my prices, but by lowering them to a more affordable price for everyone. I plan to be a counselor some day and instead of charging hundreds of dollars per session I would only charge one to two hundred dollars per session. I figure that way even if I only had two sessions a day per week that will total to over 3,000 dollars a month. I feel that with that salary I can live comfortably instead of living pay check to pay check. That alone I feel would be enough for me. Of course like most I aspire to have lots of excess money to spend however I want and live a lavish

What Barbara has written to the reader is true in most cases; if the person can withhold a low-wage job for long enough, with a low-wage salary in order to keep him/her and their family out of poverty. “What you don't necessarily realize when you start selling your time by the hour is that what you're selling is your life” (245). In this quote she saying anyone who spends their life time in their job will be guaranteed equals a better life. This is why I agree with her because I was also worked in body shop as low wage worker and I found that if I don’t work enough my wage will go down and the days that I worked hard and overtime I had more money to save for future.…

I’ve worked minimum wage jobs myself and knew I could never afford to live on my own with just that job. While the budget does have some accuracy in it, my issue lies within its flaws. I know from personal experience that you can’t expect for everything to go smoothly and not to have bad days, months, or even years. An unexpected financial burden can come crashing down on you at any moment and I’d have to agree with the author that this budget does not take this risk into account. Whether it be car trouble or accidents, hospitalization or medical care in general, or a birthday where you feel obligated to purchase a gift. You may have had all your bills taken care of, but what’s left after? Maybe all that’s left is only $200 dollars to carry you through the rest of the month. It just doesn’t work and it adds so much stress to your life. On the contrary, it is my firm belief that you cannot live on minimum wage, but you can get yourself into better places with some hard work and dedication. Growing within a company, in this case McDonald’s, is just one way to grow financially. Overall, I feel that living on the “McBudget”, that leaves you with just a couple hundred dollars left over at the end of each month, really isn’t living at…

In today's society, people work really hard, and receive practically nothing. I know it is literally impossible to live off of a minimum wage paying job, especially where I am from in New Jersey. I used to work for Sears, making only $7.25 an hour, not receiving benefits, working horrible hours, and doing twice the amount of work that I am getting paid for. Granted I did live with my parents, but I tried really hard to become independent and make my own money. It is really hard to do especially when half of the money you earn gets taken away with taxes.…

America encourages the value of self-reliance to achieving one’s goals and dreams. There is a common belief that poverty can be defeated with hard work and that the poor are simply too lazy to earn a better living. The idea of self-sufficiency is the cause of controversy for welfare programs. Poor single mothers were looked down upon for having the option to be unemployed and living solely off welfare. When President Clinton’s 1996 Welfare Reform was established, people were taken out of the program and were forced into the working world. Less taxpayer money was taken out of the upper middle classes’ income, and the poor were responsible for their own living. While this may sound ideal, most low-income people are actually unable to provide for themselves in their living conditions. With a full-time minimum wage job, they can work as hard as possible and still be stuck in debt and poverty. Their low-income prevents them from improving their lives and affording basic needs such as nutrition, health care, education, and shelter. The working poor face difficulties not through their own faults but rather because of how our society functions, where wealth is gradually becoming unevenly distributed. Unfortunately, many people are unbeknownst to the stagnant and worsening living conditions when working for minimum-wage pay. In the book Nickel and…

People who work low-wage jobs aren't necessarily poor or in need of serious help. Some people work a low-wage job as a second job to earn more income to pay off bills or expense the have. Then there are others who only work a low-wage job expecting to survive off it when in reality that's not possible the way the economy is right now. In most cases people who do work two jobs usually have support from family members or close friends in case anything goes wrong they will be able help them out in any way they can. That's the way it is with our family, if my dad isn't able to pay the house mortgage or utility bills then my older sister or mom will put in the rest to complete the payments. Then again there are the less fortunate people who aren't able to fall back on someone especially family members who support and help out the most. The people Ehrenreich, encountered didn't really have support from others around them and if they did it wasn't really helpful. One example would be Gail, who rented a flophouse with a roommate who eventually starts hitting on her but she has to put up with it because if not then she wont have enough money to come up with the weekly rent. Each co-worker Ehrenreich, knew had a different story or different situation but the common one was the place they stayed at…

Yes, the video was very informative. What stood out to me was that the people with mental issues aren't getting the same care as others. Especially the people that deal with mental health in jails which make it worse because they're surrounded by four walls all day without no one to talk to or do…

Intro: People of the middle class all know that the minimum wage of $7.25 is not sufficient to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. There is considerable evidence to show that the current generations comfortable lifestyles require a more luxurious price for standard living. The cost of living over the years has dramatically increased due to high consumer demands of products. As that being said, $7.25 is just not enough for a happy lifestyle, food, and the bills. There are many jobs that dislike or just can't afford paying high wages. Therefore, many employers hire less to save money. This causes a non-sufficient pay rate for comfortable living and high unemployment rates.…

Close to half of the world’s population lives in poverty. Many people try to stop this, but don’t really know how. One way to start the decrease in poverty is to raise the minimum wage. If you have ever worked for minimum wage, I am sure you have felt as if your time was worthless. After taxes you brought home next to nothing, no matter how often you worked. That 's at least how I felt when I worked for minimum wage. In high school I had nothing to pay for but a cell phone. I worked for minimum wage and it seemed like I barely could afford it. I had basically no bills and I worked around twenty hours a week, and it seemed like I couldn 't save any money. I always wondered how my coworkers, who were adults, who had real things to pay for pulled it off. After reading Barbara Ehrenrech 's Nickel and Dimed it really made me wonder if the current minimum wage is really high enough.…

Another minimum wage worker named Dejun Jackson says it takes him three jobs to raise a family. He gets up at 4:30am to start his shift at 5:45am. He ends his first job around 1 O’clock and has to be in his second job around 1:15. He does not end his second shift until 9 or 9:30pm. He states he has no time to see his kids except the weekends for the same reason that he has two jobs. Between his two jobs he works a total of 70 hours a week. Within a year he makes an average of $50,000. Dejun Jackson is also in school hoping one day he would be able to work just one shift and spend more time with his family. In America, the public majority tends to believe that poor people deserve to be in poverty as they are lazy. In reality, the nation’s poor work full-time, sometimes over fifty hours a week, yet still do not earn enough to escape the depths of poverty. Minimum wage is what these individuals earn, as deemed appropriate from the low skill level of the jobs they work. Often the level of incomes received are not made to be living wages and are found to be product of unreasonable systems. Making a living wage in America is unlike the textbook definitions since there are various standards of living within each state that dictate the level. As a result including, an ever-growing population of consumer workers, deskilled jobs, and irrationality caused from McDonaldization, countless individuals, specifically: the uneducated, Blacks, Latinos, and young adults, fall into a class of “working poor”.…

Our country is held together by the families that it holds within. With the current minimum wage, 73% of our working population lives in poverty. (Furman) Many might assume that the majority of the minimum wage workers are teenagers or college bound students. This is false. Studies show that more than 50% of minimum wage workers are over the age of 25. (Conlin) At this you already have influence on our economy and what it may become. Do we really want our economy to stay at a low-point when we can simply higher this rate and become a country known for prosperity?
