For example, in one of the stimulations where I needed to gather information from the patient for doing the cardiovascular risk assessment, she was wondering if I asked a lot of questions about her personal details as well

This might be because of my unforgettable past experience while working on the ward and doing medicine reconciliation with patients, while interacting with one elderly patient with dementia, I was trying to talk in a slow speech clearly. However, out of my expectation, she was furious and didn’t understand what I was looking for. After this experience, I was lack of self-efficacy when talking to patients, for fear that they would suddenly burst into anger which I couldn’t manage and in worst case, patient harm might be resulted as patient was not listening to my concern and advice. What I have learned about therapeutic communication is that if you listen and interact with the patient in a way that is not threatening to them, they are more likely going to share more information and be more open to answering your questions. What I have learned about non therapeutic communication is that your nonverbal behaviors play a big part in the patient and nurse relationship.
