Assignment #2

On October 9th, 2012 I traveled to Holt Michigan to attend a 3-day garage sale. I found the ad on www.craigslist.com browsing the Lansing Area Garage Sale search. I’ve attached a picture of the ad for this particular garage sale at the end of this paper. The owner of the house, Pam and her sister Karen overlooked the sale held in Pam’s garage. They are a single-family home. We introduced ourselves at arrival and asked for permission to take pictures. They were very welcoming and friendly towards our arrival and told us we could do so.
Initially they asked if we were looking for anything specific and chatted with us. Pam began to tell us the history to some of the items

Two sellers were present when we arrived and during our stay, 4 customers came through. The customers were all elderly and all from around the area. Two women came in looking for specific items they saw were advertised online and one man was looking for old antique jewelry. The other lady seemed to just be browsing but she did not purchase anything. The set up in the garage made for an easy flow of traffic and really getting a great look of all the products. The customers were polite, did not say much and kept to themselves. The two elderly ladies that came in for specifics were looking for old tapes and cassettes and old golf clubs. They ended up finding what they needed and made their purchase. Nobody stayed longer than a half hour. The clubs were $4.50 per club and the cassettes were $1.50. Items at this garage sale were very cheap. The main thing I noticed about customer behavior was with the seller, who was active in each of her customer’s sales. She politely greeted everyone and helped each customer out; she connected and shared stories with every single person who came through, which I thought was a unique niche to her garage sale. The customers were polite back and seemed very interested in the stories behind her items and some even shared family history stories they had. It was a nice atmosphere to be observing.

Brandon is from Colorado and he comes down to Greenwood for the summer and sells fireworks. He comes in the shop almost every night and orders either green tea and honey, or a house coffee with whip cream and caramel sauce on top. We also have a few people that visit Greenwood once a year for certain events and always are ready to have their favorite drink from Java House. There is a lady that has to have her oxygen tank and her husband that is sometimes in a wheel chair that come every week on Friday or Saturday. They order loaded baked potato soup, strawberry spinach salad, half a sandwich, usually a TBA (turkey, bacon, avocado), and two large peach smoothies. I have their soups warming up before they even walk through the door. One of my favorite customers is John Miller. He is a retired bomb squad technician and has a distinct ascent. He likes to talk, make jokes, and is never in a bad mood. He just comes in Java House mostly to sit, drink coffee, and talk with us. Another lady has been getting a large potato soup and taking it to her friend that can’t get around on her own. She pays $5.50 every day because her friend doesn’t eat much and she loves our potato…
