Explain what the long term political, economic, and social effects of Reconstruction were and the southern reaction on African Americans.
- The Reconstruction era resulted in African-Americans' rights being taking away and living like they were in the times of slavery, except they weren't slaves, just really poor. African Americans and poor whites, were forced into the system of share-cropping, that is, they have to give a portion of their crops they grew to a landowner for money. There were attempts to fight this, but vigilante groups like the KKK and Order of the White Camellia killed anyone who fought for Black rights, as well as the Democrats in general.
The Democratic Party became the dominant party in the South, and became a symbol for white supremacy and segregation for decades, until the 1950s. The Republican party became the top party in the North, and a symbol for industrialization and white city workers, as well as businessman, but the Republicans gave up the fight for the civil rights of Blacks.
