3-2-1 Assessment Sheet What are three key things you learned about the Dark Ages in this lesson? Please be sure to include at least two complete sentences for each one.
In Norman settlements, Lords controlled the villages as well as ruling and governing their land. Lords were oftentimes knights and served the king Norman settlements were surrounded by a wall that encompassed the lord’s house, and the rest of the village and the lord’s house usually had yet another wall. The village usually contained a stockpile of food, a well, and weapons. The idea is that they would have everything that they needed to survive within the walls, in case of an attack.
Old English resembles modern English, but not very closely. One must remember that old English was only a component of the languages that formed together to make modern English. Latin, Celtic and German were blended together and reformed over time to make today’s English.
Christianity wasn’t always the main religion of ancient Britain. It only became truly popular and dominant after the romans had been ran out of Britain and the Germanic tribes formed together to make the Anglo-Saxons.
Explain two things that you would still like to know about the development of Old English. Please be sure to include at least one complete sentence for each one.
I would like to learn more about the Modern English words that show roots in German Latin and Celtic.
I would enjoy studying which language our grammar is based off of, and how we mixed certain rules in grammar from different languages.

    The English language (modern English) according to reference is sometimes described as first global “lingua franca”. It is a superior language and is being used, with evidence by over 360 million native speakers, living in 54 countries and 27 non-sovereign entities. English is now known as an international language in diplomatic fields. The growth of English was mainly formed in the British Empire and by the late 19th century it slowly spread globally. English replaced German as the dominant language of science noble prize laureates during the second half of the 20th century. It also equaled or may have surpassed French as the dominant language of diplomacy during the last half of the 19th century. The word English derives from the eponym angle, the name of a Germanic tribe thought to have originated from the angeln area of Tutland, now in northern Germany. English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic invaders or settlers from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands. The English language belongs to Anglo-Frisian sub group of the West Germanic branch of the Germanic family, a member of the indo European languages. This language was developed gradually through a series of evolution which begins from old English, Middle English and early modern English. Despite extensive lexical borrowing, the workings of the English language are resolutely Germanic, and English remains classified as that due to its structure and grammar. With renaissance, along with other European languages such as German, Dutch, and Latin and ancient Greek supplanted Norman and French as the main source of new words.     1. Some Characteristics of Middle English Page 1 of 3 Some Characteristics of Middle English Vocabulary: Consider these pairs of Modern English words. The first of each pair is derived from Old English and the second is of Anglo-Norman origin: pig/pork, chicken/poultry, calf/veal, cow/beef, wood/forest, sheep/mutton, house/mansion, worthy/honourable, bold/courageous, freedom/liberty. The role of Anglo-Norman as the language of government and law can be seen in the abundance of Modern English words for the mechanisms of government which derive from Anglo-Norman: court, judge jury, appeal, parliament.
