2nd Quarter Reflection

Reflection

This quarter in US/VA I improved my skills in making connections to history through our first, and second quarter project. The project gave me a chance to use creativity and be informative in my project by making an idea that goes over the five eras of my topic. This quarter I used my synthesizing habit of mind in history class by applying past knowledge, question and problem solving, and by gathering data through all senses.

I used my synthesizing habit of mind in history class by applying past knowledge. I applied past knowledge from my sophomore year in high school to my junior year. By my past experiences with projects I had a better basis where to get reliable information. For my first project in US/VA I made five journal entries to correspond with the five topics that were given to me for the first quarter project.

Another way I synthesized this quarter is by using background knowledge when it came to the 2nd quarter project. I used background knowledge in helping me relate the terms for my project from sophomore and freshman world history. Also English class helped me on my tests/quizzes by using words and their stories and gave me better test-taking skills. Background knowledge helped me become a better student in US/VA by giving me extensive skills and a larger vocabulary.

I used my synthesizing habit of mind in US/VA by question and problem solving. Many times questions were posed to me and I had to apply my synthesizing habit of mind to solve them. When playing Jeopardy to study for a test in class, I would use the strategy of question and problem solving. This approach helped me understand the concept more and be on top of the test and hopefully get an higher grade.

This quarter in US/VA I became an improved student in this class, which made me more confident when taking tests, or completing projects. By synthesizing habit of mind, I was able to be more effective and efficient in class and understand the

Participating is one of the best ways to help students remember quickly what they have just learned in class. For example, students can try to answer the questions, raise their hand when the teacher asks for students to show their homework or write on the board, join in groups for discussing or doing assignments, and ask questions to make sense and solve what they misunderstand. The second simple skill is taking plentiful notes. To make good notes, students can use colorful pens or colorful notes for different information, and highlight the important words or ideas in notebooks and textbooks. When students are expected to focus on the lesson, using initials, shorthand, and abbreviated symbols are also helpful to follow the class. In addition, making mind maps is an effective way to capture all the knowledge after every lesson. Students can create a mind map on paper or in an app on a tablet; furthermore, students can find out several useful software tools, which are available to buy or for free, on the Internet such as the mind map software tool of Tony Buzan, Xmind and so on. To this end, students can increase their success by taking notes, participating in class, and creating effective mind…

This semester, I learned abundance amount of information that I did not know before and I took each and every new knowledge into heart. I learn about parallelism, misplaced modifier, PIE, commas, i.e./e.g., entry points/ strategies, active vs. passive verbs, and not using ‘you’ in academic writing and more but what stood out to me the most was PIE. Every topic I learned in this class will be in use toward my major but mostly in future papers. This semester, I learned point illustration explanation (PIE) in my writing skills which will be valuable in my future college papers.…

To succeed in my task, I used my existing knowledge of English grammar, syntax and vocabulary to explain a subject trough a video. My knowledge of English allowed me to make sure that there were very few mistakes in my video so the target audience (future secondary 5 students) would be able to understand the relayed information. I used my knowledge gained in Art class about colours and what attracts the eye to make my video as visually interesting as possible. I also used what I learned in last year’s interdisciplinary project on WWII to better understand the context in which the program. What I knew of the economic crisis of 1929, WWI and WWII, learned in secondary 4 history class, also helped me understand the political, social and economical…

For this week's employee compliance plan, understanding state and federal laws will help these business owners ensure proper compliance and avoid any legal issues. Discussing laws such as the Civil Right Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act ensures businesses take their employees into consideration. These federal laws apply to all businesses to prevent employee discrimination and to ensure a safe and healthy working environment such as the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration or OSHA. Although not all states give OSHA full control to govern what is safe and what is not, it is imperative that measures accommodate a safe environment for employees.…

I did not know what synthesis essay was before reading this, but now I know what it is and how to write them. There are many points that I concur with in this assignment. One of them is that many facts that we know of are not facts. I knew about this before because I know the different history “facts” between different countries. For example, in Vietnamese history book, Vietnamese created their own country themselves; while in Chinese history book, Vietnam was a part of China. Even though I already knew about this concept before, I still believed a lot of “facts” from the textbooks so I find it’s interesting that we should not believe in them fully. Another point that I agree with the authors was that teachers should give students more time to develop their thoughts. I hope that Dr. Bresch can give us more time to write our visual argument essays, and I think that writing only Draft 1 is not enough, as it is not really what “multiple drafting” is. Also, it would be better for the teacher to check the students’ works as well as peer revising because the teacher can comment on whether the students are on track or…

I also think that creativity is another important habit of mind to have because being able to use novel resources to pull out and investigate ideas plays a big role in higher level writing. I’ve recently gained this habit from previous writing classes and it’s helped bring out a lot more ideas and allowed me to respond correctly to other essays. Without creativity it would be hard to respond to other essays and other ideas.…
