Non Commissioned officers are a vital part of the United States Army which is why they are often referred to as the “back bone of the Army”. Non Commissioned officers play several key roles in the army, everywhere from the lowest Sergeant or Corporal as a team leader to the First Sergeant working as advisory and counter part to a Captain in charge of a Company, to a Command Sergeant Major, responsible for anything fro a battalion to an entire post. Regardless of which position a non commissioned offer finds themselves in their responsibilities inherent to that role are of the utmost importance.
Non commissioned officers must be responsible for everything within their left and right limits. Which means being accountable for what you do or fail to do. Non commissioned officers are responsible to fulfill not only their individual duties, but in addition they must ensure their teams and units are successful. You are accountable for your personal conduct and that of your soldiers. Responsibilities are the one thing that cannot be delegated. A non commissioned officer, same as a soldier, is accountable for his actions to fellow soldiers, leaders, unit and the US Army. The role of a non commissioned officer always includes setting the standard and enforcing the rules and regulation of the United States Army. They are always looked to for an example of what is right and how to properly conduct ones self.

No one is more professional than I. I am a noncommissioned officer, a leader of Soldiers. As a noncommissioned officer, I realize that I am a member of a time-honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army.” I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service, and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety. Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind—accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a noncommissioned officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my Soldiers, and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my Soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment. Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that…

Soldier accountability is the one of the main responsibilities of the leadership in the Army. Whether it comes from the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) support channel or from the actual chain of command. The NCO support channel plays the biggest role in the accountability process. During any type of formation you will notice that the process starts with team leaders ensuring their team is all present passing the information through the squad leader to the platoon sergeant. At this point the platoon sergeant will pass the information along to the platoon leader and company first sergeant. The company first sergeant will then pass the information along to the company commander. At this point if there…
