By the end of the “Achievement” chapter, Rodriguez has some very profound things to say about his views on educational reform and personal evolution. The things that he says in the ending pages of the chapter do not really seem like they are the tale of a “happy ending” but more so, a large pun or an ironic statement made about how our desires entail such influential consequences. On pages 72-73, Rodriguez basically states that education is a tough process, a changing process even, and if one wants to become educated, one must be willing to embody some type of mental and/or spiritual change. He makes the point that some people, which would most likely be hippies or democrats –but he refers to them as “Radical educationalists”, are quick to…

A theme that was discussed repeatedly through the seminar was destiny. Nikol explained that destiny drove Santiago to travel all the way to Egypt and then all the way back home at the end of the book. On many pages of the book, the term, “Personal legend” appears; this refers to, “What you always have wanted to accomplish” (23). The only difference between a personal legend and destiny is that someone must desire to accomplish a personal legend. Once passion and desire exists, your personal legend becomes your destiny, a key lesson within the book. Ben brought up how the book in its entirety compares to the story of each and every teenage child growing up and moving to college or starting life in the real world after graduating. Santiago’s journey into wisdom and…

It wasn’t until the end of my freshman year that I began to understand part of the connotation of his words. He was a man to speak from experience, and I truly believed him. That same year, I was named number 5 of my class, tied with four other people, for the class of 2016, with a GPA of 3.900. Quite frankly, I was surprised to see how far I had gotten up without knowing or trying as hard as I could have. As I entered sophomore year, I began with a determined mindset. A mindset that was moderately similar to the one I had been surrounded with in band. As my director spoke about how one’s determination, integrity and work ethic can take a person with nothing to the end of the line with everything. I had never thought about how obtainable the craziest dream could really be until this individual shared his ideals with the rest of the family…

First, picture something you really want and wonder of a way to get it. The outcome can’t always be truth. The story “Araby” teaches its reader a lesson, a battle where reality breaks through Illusion’s fog and harshly destroys all the sweet hopes. For example, that little boy couldn’t control his feelings to the girl of his dreams, but in reality the girl never liked him in the first place. Having no doubts in their future affair, the boy gets hurt at the end. High expectations usually are the cause of a huge failure. Therefore, the less you expect, the less you will be let down; that can be his lesson after all. Although it doesn’t describe the boy’s intentions since it is a short story, we can easily feel the boy’s pain after the rejection.…

I started off trying to remember what it was like being face to face with the ‘angriest man in the world’ for five hours a week, slowly spilling my thoughts and memories on paper, editing, revising and changing things more times than I can remember. Sometimes tossing out entire paragraphs and then later regretting it. The more I wrote, the more I remembered how his ‘teachings’ didn’t work and how I was glad to finally be out of seventh grade on the last day of school.…
