In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, the party is guaranteed full control over everybody because of the many advancements in technology. Orwell is sure to make it clear how a totalitarianism government can completely destroy a society. This form of government is used to make sure the government has the unfair advantage over the people. The use of technology allowing nobody privacy also helps make a totalitarian government possible but, not seen as a good thing in Oceania by the people. In this novel the government would be considered The Party. The Party controls literally every aspect of the Oceanians lives. They control what they think by making certain phrases or even words illegal. If you even so much as think anything that goes against The Party then you may even be caught by the thought police and taken to prison or vaporized. You must love Big Brother in order to meet the party’s requirements for living. There were not many who went against big brother but when you did you tended to live a life of fear. “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER over and over again, filling half a page. He could not help feeling a twinge of panic” (1.1.18). This shows how even the smallest thing such as writing how you feel in a diary was controlled by the party. There was no freedom anywhere, not even in the “safety” of your own home. To control the society as a whole there were devices referred to as telescreens. These Davis 2
Devices allowed The Party members to see and hear anything and everything an individual was doing. They were monitored twenty four seven and they were in your homes and any public place. There was absolutely no way of turning it off. The Party had complete control over the way you behaved everywhere. “The instrument (the telescreen it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off” (1.1.3). This shows how even when people thought they were safe in their homes, the slightest mistake could have them vaporized. The thought police would instantly catch and report them. They controlled people ideas because if there happened to be the least bit of concern about one turning on big brother it had to be taken care of. Through this form of intimidation and technology they had complete control over every individual and not only their actions but, their thoughts as well thus, resulting in no privacy for anybody. Another way The Party had total control over society was through the use of the new language known as newspeak. The primary goal of this language was to completely replace oldspeak. The purpose and goal of newspeak was to completely eliminate any words that allowed an individual to think of anything negative of the party. It rid of any words that allowed for personal thoughts, words such as “independence” or “honor”. Words such as those were simply over ridden because words like those allowed for negative thought. Another goal of newspeak was to get people to stop trying to think in “higher up” terms. They wanted to “dumb it down” so that repetition was all that they knew. There would be no creating thoughts based off what you knew because you would know nothing but, the repetitions of the words you were taught. “Don’t you see that the whole aim of newspeak is to narrow the range of thought?” (1.5.52) with that being done it would eliminate any chance of a rebellion against the party and Davis 3
They would forever only know the party. Future generations would know other way of life because they were never even familiar with oldspeak. There were many forms of technology that helped The Party gain and keep full control over Oceania. These many forms were the telescreens which were the main form of technology throughout this book. They watched your every move and could even recognize an inappropriate facial expression. They had microphones so they could hear everything you were saying and they had people...
