1755 Lisbon Earthquake
The 1755 Lisbon earthquake had far reaching implications. Not only was it physically devastating, it also changes the landscape of the influential philosophers of the day. It led to the development and solidification of the ideas. No matter how devastating it was physically it had varying affects on the philosophy of the day. It had a wide variety of effects on philosophy, religion, and science. It pushed some, like Voltaire, to become more pessimistic, while others, like Rousseau, to become more optimistic. Even further it pushed some, like Kant, to use reason and science to explain it, while others, like Wesley, looked to the church and religion.

    The largest earthquake recorded in the 20th century is the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, also known as the Great Chilean earthquake which occurred on May 22, 1960 and hit approximately 100 miles off the coast of Chile, which is parallel to the city of Valdivia. With a rate of 9.5 on the moment magnitude scale, this earthquake occurred in the afternoon and lasted approximately 2 minutes (brit). After just thirty minutes of the major earthquake, a foreshock shook the area near the towns of Valdivia and Peurta Montt (kids). The four foreshocks that followed had a magnitude of greater than 7.0. The largest earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 and caused a large amount of damage to the Concepcion area. The devastating earthquake triggered a tsunami just off the coast of central Chile, which affected the entire Pacific Basin (usgs). After Chile, the tsunami traveled hundreds of miles and caused destruction all around the Pacific. The places that experienced the most impact was Hawaii and Japan (2010). The earthquake set off waves which bounced back and forth across the Pacific Ocean for a week (history).     The Punic Wars were a series of three wars fought between Rome and Carthage from 264 BC to 146 BC. At the time, they were probably the largest wars that had ever taken place. The term Punic comes from the Latin word Punicus (or Poenicus), meaning "Carthaginian", with reference to the Carthaginians' Phoenician ancestry. The main cause of the Punic Wars was the conflict of interests between the existing Carthaginian Empire and the expanding Roman Republic. The Romans were initially interested in expansion via Sicily (which at that time was a cultural melting pot), part of which lay under Carthaginian control. At the start of the first Punic War, Carthage was the dominant power of the Western Mediterranean, with an extensive maritime empire, while Rome was the rapidly ascending power in Italy, but lacked the naval power of Carthage. By the end of the third war, after more than a hundred years, and the loss of many hundreds of thousands of soldiers from both sides, Rome had conquered Carthage's empire and completely destroyed the city, becoming the most powerful state of the Western Mediterranean. With the end of the Macedonian wars – which ran concurrently with the Punic Wars – and the defeat of the Seleucid King Antiochus III the Great in the Roman–Syrian War (Treaty of Apamea, 188 BC) in the eastern sea, Rome emerged as the dominant Mediterranean power and one of the most powerful cities in classical antiquity. The sound of swords were like a million trains, battle cry’s the sound of a pack of hungry hyenas, and the the smell of metal, blood and sweat stretched all across the land. A ferocious rumble emerged from the the deep depths of the earth. Moments later as the earth cracked into two the same way thunders roles across the night sky on a stormy night. everyone stopped, as a large figure arose from the mighty crack. I am Cuchulain, god of pain and suffering, who dare disturb me from my eternal slumber. Not a single noise was made as every one stood in aw. Then a single mighty and courageous war cry emerged from one of the warriors, and the thunderous battle resumed. As so did Cuchulain. The battle continued for numerous hours. Though no one was any match for the mighty god, and as the battle was over, so were shiva hefty plans to steel the orb of tranquillity.
