3. Assess the significance of the Darien venture in relation to the negotiations for Union in 1702-03 and 1706-07.

In 1695 the Scottish parliament passed an act legitimising the Company of Scotland. The Company of Scotland was entitled to settle and build colonies in uninhabited areas with native consent that had not been claimed. However, crucially, the Company was not entitled to trade with nations in conflict with the King although the Crown would pay for losses accrued due to foreign powers1. The Company eventually decided to settle on colonising a region of the Americas known as Darien which was the idea of William Paterson who had helped set up the bank of England2.
