Stage in the Hero’s Journey
Film Component
Ordinary World The hero’s normal world before the story begins
Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) lived in Detroit for many years until his mom got a promotion in Beijing, China. So they go live in Beijing. Before they left, Dre marked on his door life timeline “Moved to China” for the last time.

Call to Adventure The hero is presented with a problem, challenge or adventure to undertake Once they arrive at Beijing, Dre meets a friend named Harry and Harry invites him to play basketball. But Dre waited for the afternoon and walked down to play. He was starring at a girl and started talking to her while she was practicing the violin. Then some boy comes and throws her paper because she wasn’t focused and Dre starts fighting with him but the boy knew Kung Fu so Dre got beat up really bad. That created tension between them and the boy was always being a bully to Dre. So the Mr. Han, the maintenance guy from the apartments where he lived made a deal with the boys coach. Dre had to fight at the Kung Fu tournament.

Refusal of the Call The hero refuses the challenge or journey, usually out of fear Dre got upset because he thought he was going to get beat up in public since he didn’t know Kung Fu, but Mr. Han would teach him real Kung Fu.
It wasn’t really that he refused; he just got a little upset.

Meeting with the Mentor The hero meets a mentor to gain confidence, advice or training to face the adventure Mr. Han was Dre’s mentor. He would train a lot with him and it was just as little as putting on, taking off. picking up, and hanging up his sweater. Mr. Han made him do it with attitude. There was a part where Dre got tired and thought Mr. Han was just messing with him and not teaching him anything. Dre was going to give up already and that’s when they started really the Kung Fu. Mr. Han motivated him a lot.

In the end of east, the readers see how Pon Man’s disobedience to his father, Seid Quan, results in them drifting further and further away from each other. In fact, Seid Quan’s blindness towards his son’s feelings is what causes Pon Man to break the rules which only enlarges the gap between them. As a way to have him more involved in the community, Mr. Wong offers Pon Man to join his son’s basketball team. However, Seid Quan quickly answers for his son saying “ ‘he wouldn’t want to have to barge in like that. They probably don’t have a spot for him anyway’ ” (Lee 79). Seid Quan does not want Pon Man to be influenced by the negativity of the boys in Chinatown. He wants his son to succeed and the only way to see it happen is if Pon Man is serious in everything he does. Seid Quan pushes the image of being a good Chinese boy onto Pon Man and expects him to take over the barbershop. Unfortunately, Pon Man views his father’s behavior as being a controlling parent and decides to fight back. As a sign of his rebellion, Pon Man “wants to punch him [Seid Quan] in the back of the head or yell at him until he crumples into a ball of splintered…

    For Instance, Campbell’s beginning stage of the hero´s journey is defined as the ¨call to adventure.¨ He states, ¨A blunder-apparently the merest chance-reveals an unsuspected world, and the individual is drawn into a relationship with forces that are not rightly understood. The familiar life horizon has been outgrown; the old concepts, ideals, and emotional patterns no longer fit¨ (51). Gerry faces an infested, deadly world of zombies where he must fight in order to protect his family. The film’s protagonist struggles to keep his family in a safe environment, so they must keep moving in order to stay alive. As they are on the move Garry receives a phone call from Thierry, who is a friend and an under-secretary of the U.N.; to let him know he will send a helicopter to rescue him and his family. However, in order to be rescued they need to survive another long dangerous night.     The strategy that Liu used to get away from the Asian American stereotype was by acting completely being to total opposite of what Asians are known for. Asians are stereotypically know for being very good at math and science, so Liu decided that he would study history.
