Why it started?
The 100k lives campaign started due to what they described as a flawed healthcare system. The institute of medicine reports an estimated 98,000 patients die a year due to medical injuries and 2 million patients are affected by nosocomial infections. Although the US healthcare system spends the most money on healthcare we are still ranked low compared to other industrialized nations in terms of quality of care. Due to these staggering statistics the institute of healthcare improvement (IHI) launched a nationwide campaign of research-based initiatives geared towards the improvement in the quality of practice and a reduction in the mortality rate of the American healthcare system.
What measures were implemented to improve healthcare?
Some of the interventions implemented since the start of the campaign have had a tremendous impact, however the list is getting larger to include more interventions as it evolves and grows in participation for the medical community. Some of the interventions include deploying rapid response teams at the first sign of patient decline, deliver Reliable, evidence-based care for acute myocardial Infarction to prevent deaths
from heart attack, prevent Adverse Drug Events (ADE) by implementing medication reconciliation, prevent Central Line Infections by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically grounded steps called the "Central Line Bundle”, prevent surgical site Infections by reliably delivering the correct perioperative antibiotics at the proper time, prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia by implementing a series of interdependent, scientifically grounded steps including the "Ventilator Bundle" . Where is it now?
