“10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU” in review and comparison to Shakespeare’s “TAMING OF THE SHREW”. The adaption of the Shakespearian play the Taming of the Shrew, Known as” 10 Things I hate about you”, was an adequate representation. It lacked a true representation due to the fact that the original play began with the prank played on poor tinker Christopher Sly by The Local Lord. Watch this adaption I noticed that it had no references to that aspect of the play. However the modern day version of the play did have a lot of similarly named characters and the story line was basically the same as Shakespeare’s play. Primary Characters in the play are: Bianca the beautiful young maiden, appropriately named the same in the in the film adaption, Katherine who is the sister of Bianca, and labeled as being ill tempered, heinous bitch, her counterpart in the film appropriately named “Katarina” aka “Kat” who personified the original characters temperament . The father of these to lovely maiden named Baptista Minola, a wealth old man, who declared “that no one may court Bianca until first her older sister, the vicious, ill-tempered Katherine, is married. The same held true for the Stratford sisters whose father also declare “Bianca will not be allowed to date until her older sister Katarina started dating”. Katarina vowed never to date which left Bianca, who already had two suitors, in a state of romantic limbo. The modern film version of Taming of the Shrew is shot in scenic Seattle Washington; all of the landscaping scenes give this film and old English charm. The actual school in which the film was shot, Stadium High School in Tacoma Washington, gave this film the English Castle estate feel, just as if the modern day cast was in 16th or 17th century English country side. The High School location offered a scenic backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, obviously shot in the spring and

William Shakespeare wrote a famous piece called “The Taming of the Shrew” in the late 16th century. In 1999, a modern version of Shakespeare's piece was created into a film called “10 Things I hate About You”. They are obviously both similar due to the fact that “10 Things I Hate About You” was a remake of the original, but they are not completely the same. The modern film version was changed to suit a different audience of the time period and contained more up-to-date features.…

Taming of the Shrew is a romantic comedy written by William Shakespeare in the 1500’s. It takes place in the city of Padua, presumably during the Italian Renaissance. The major conflict of the play is ‘taming’ a hot-headed woman named Katherine and to overcome the rule her father holds on his two daughters where the eldest marries first. The script brings up a lot of attention in the feminist theory. But, Shakespeare’s play reflects on the archetypes of characters, situations, and symbols. These connections are made in the play to make the audience familiar with the text and provide a deeper understanding.…

Apart from this ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ does seem to have many of the conventions that are required to make up a comedy. Many of the characters appear to be the conventional or stock characters for a comedy, for example Petruchio could be seen as the fool and Bianca as the young, innocent maiden.…

The Taming of the Shrew was a Shakespearean play that was written between 1590 and 1592. Set in both Padua, and Verona, Italy, the play details the “love” story of Petruchio and Katherina. Shakespeare had written the play to be a comedic piece. In 1967 Franco Zeffirelli transformed The Taming of the Shrew into a movie. Maintaining the original story line and setting, Zeffirelli worked the relationship of actors Richard Burton, Petruchio, and Elizabeth Taylor, Katherina into the comedic movie. In 1999 the Shakespearean play was transformed again and directed by Gil Junger. Junger’s movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, is a modernized take on the original play. Changing Katherina to Kat, and Petruchio to Patrick, Junger immersed the movie in the popular culture ideals of the 1990’s. Interpretations of the texts differ from person to person, this opinions will be based upon an individuals beliefs and values. I interpreted both texts to be misogynistic, although The Taming of the Shrew is more so than 10 Things I Hate About…

The transformation of Shrew’s comedic genre into the ‘teen’ genre in 10 Things facilitates its relocation into high school. In Shrew, comedy revolves around the physical violence upon Kate, deception, and a play on words. The sight of a ‘shrew’ physically subdued by a man would have been humorous to an Elizabethan audience. Humour is also evident in Petruchio and Kate’s verbal battle, where elaborate puns are constructed. ‘Women are made to bear and so are you’ (II.i.200). Here, Petruchio twists the word ‘bear’ into meaning ‘giving childbirth’, thus twisting Kate’s insults into innuendo. Influenced by the ‘teen’ genre and the rise of feminism, in 10 Things, comedy exists verbally and in stereotypical teenage experiences. Ms Perky’s attempt to describe an erotic scene in her novel is evidence of verbal humour, similar to Petruchio’s use of puns. The concept of growing up is embodied in Kat’s antisocial behaviour. Described as a ‘heinous bitch’, her unfriendly manner illustrates her inability to accept her adolescence, such as dating. This is emphasised in the party scene, where the childhood swings she is sitting on juxtapose against the adolescent party house in the background. The modern adaptation also explores teenage dating. Dating forms the basis of comedy. Bianca feels the urge to date for the purpose of fitting in to teenage culture.…

The reason is because it puts too much responsibility on relations roles. I feel as if relationships should be equal. No one should have more power than the other person in the relationship. I feel that both relationships in the book belittles the other partner. Seeing as though one person is underneath its “owner”. Bianca and Lucentio relationship is the definition of Elizabethans idea of a wife/ husband. The reason is because they are actually following step by step directions on how things are suppose to be. Especially how he won her hand at marriage. Normally in relationship marriage is not arranged and already planned before the wedding actually…

With the practice of taking older texts and transforming characters, plots, themes and situations, they are able to be translated into a more modern context in which younger generations are able to understand. But inevitably when an appropriation is viewed, we are aware that values have changed over time. This appropriation can modified to express themes from William Shakespeare’s, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ and its appropriation ‘Ten Things I Hate about You’. The values of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ can be translated towards ‘Ten Things I Hate about you.’ These values that are explored both texts are marriage, parenting and self identity.…

The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare, illustrates an interesting marriage situation involving two sisters and their many suitors. Although Shakespeare considered the play a comedy because the main character does not die, it maintains a negative tone throughout the play. None of the characters in the play display virtuous characteristics, but Petruccio stands out as the least saintly person in the play because of his greed and domineering nature.…
