Passage A
A Great Conductor
This passage describes a series of three sequences in a television programme about a great orchestral conductor. These sequences trace the course of some very unusual events.
In the first sequence, the elderly Signor Alessandro sits at a table in a restaurant. Tonight he will conduct Beethoven’s powerful Fifth Symphony yet again. Tomorrow he will conduct the much gentler
Sixth Symphony. At least he thinks they are in that order. His memory frequently fails him these days.
Already in his mind he hears the magnificent opening chords of the Fifth Symphony and sees his own powerful gestures as he drives his orchestra forward. He smiles. Great conductors instinctively know which gestures best communicate with the players. His chicken curry arrives. Always a chicken curry before a concert. His excuse is that it helps the adrenalin to flow. This curry has been cooked to perfection. The aroma tickles his nostrils and the chicken – ah, so succulent – tempts

A loud “whoosh” echoes throughout the dark distant auditorium, and in an instant huge gleaming lights lower themselves upon the stage. The stage sits empty, lifeless, waiting, listening..listening for one to drop jaws with their all-knowing Mozart Symphony or disappoint with a piece that has no rhythm. With each day a new audience gathers around to join the stage in listening. To some it just may be a song, but to others it is a message, a chapter, a story. A story that throws all of life's up’s, all of life's downs. All of it’s good days, it’s bad days. Everything described on one sheet of paper.. But ultimately that was the audience's choice. The stage waited each day for the next performer, for the next song..With each passing person a new song, a new story told, and here is mine.…

The classical work of art was composed during the years of 1822-1824. “The Ninth Symphony seems the most like a construction of mirrors, reflecting and refracting the values, hopes, and fears of those who seek to understand and explain it.” (Kinderman, 2009) Of the four major movements within the song, Ode to Joy which is the final movement is very popular even today. It consists of many different instruments including the winds in twos, piccolo, and contra bassoon; 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones;2 kettledrums, triangle, cymbals, bass drum (the three last only in the 4th movement); the strings, in quintet; a quartet of solo voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) in the finale; a four voice choir in the…

The classical composers of the past connected me to the world in a way I never thought possible. Every song was a new adventure. Once, I was the passenger of, as Berlin critic Ludwig Rellstab described it, “a boat passing the wild scenery of Lake Lucerne in the Moonlight” in Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Another time, I was a soldier in the Turkish military, being encouraged by Mozart’s “Rondo alla Turca.” And yet, I was still only a listener. In all my fantasies brought about by the pieces I revered, I could only stand aside and listen as a nameless pianist led me wherever they so chose. Without realizing it, my fantasies changed. I was no longer the passenger, but the moonlight itself, moving the water to my will. I was no longer a soldier in the Turkish military, but instead the Janissary band itself, playing to embolden an army taking its first steps towards…

Passage A The Duvall family were relatively new to the village of Malsam. They had feared a long period of suspicion, but even gimlet-eyed old women, who normally took months to unbend and acknowledge newcomers, warmed to the blond-haired children and their gentle parents. The weather in these parts was less hospitable. The wind never settled and, as the Duvalls gathered by the fire each night, their little home wheezed and moaned like an out of tune accordion. Even though the floors were spotless, and Katya, the mother, insisted on cleanliness in this new home of theirs, draughts still made skittering noises. The children, Gabriel and Luca, did schoolwork upstairs, but more often played noisily with good friends they had made. Henri, their father, was becoming well-known for his finely crafted furniture, and life was good here. One night, when the grumbling of their home was low, Henri and Katya were about to settle to sleep, when they both heard unfamiliar sounds; tiny…
