‘Death of a Naturalist’ by Seamus Heaney and ‘Field Mouse’ by Gillian Clarke both explore the theme of nature. Compare both poems and their treatment of this them and then compare them to two poems in the pre- 1914 collection. (‘The Eagle’, Tennyson and ‘Patrolling Barnegat’, Whitman)
‘Death of a naturalist’ is a poem about the views, of a little boy, on nature. It begins positive as he likes the frogspawn; ‘best of all was the warm thick slobber of frogspawn’. However as he grows he believes that nature is not all positive and that now the frogs are ‘great slime kings.’ The poem Field Mouse’ appears to be quite calm and peaceful as they ‘cut the hay’ however it is concealing the destruction that is happening elsewhere. The third poem is ‘Patrolling Barnegat’ by Walt Whitman and this is a vivid, negative description of nature which is described as ‘demonic’. The final poem being compared is ‘The eagle’. In six lines Tennyson portrays admiration and respect for nature. The Eagle is the centre of the universe ‘ringed’ with power and as powerful as a ‘thunderbolt’.
Seamus Heaney presents a view of nature which changes overtime. As a boy he was taught to love and appreciate nature even when ‘flax rotted’ and the dam ‘festered’. The word ‘festered’ juxtaposes with the phrase ‘bubbles gargled delicately’ and together they show that even at a young age he knew that not all of nature was perfect. At a young age his main love was for the ‘warm thick slobber of frogspawn’ which he was taught to love by ‘miss walls’. It is all described in a very childish manner which portrays that he took allot of pleasure out of playing and touching it. Heaney uses onomatopoeia in the word ‘slobber’ which helps convey the image of the young boy playing with spawn slipping through his fingers.
On the other hand Clarke portrays a very different view of nature in ‘Field Mouse’. This poem is not written from a personal point of view, instead from the view point of another child who holds ‘a

    Judith Beveridge’s poetry examines the ability of humans or the materialistic world to be interconnected with nature. In the poem Mulla Bulla Beach she examines a human’s ability to be part of nature, particularly from an outsiders perspective. She states “ A new world to me, but familiar”, demonstrating how she can be related to nature. She also examines an insiders perspective on the beach, in particular the fisherman, stating “ who are born hearing the sea always there” She examines how the fisherman have become part of the natural rhythm demonstrating how humans can be part of nature, and the tension between the material world and nature does not need to exist. She uses many similes to link humans or human objects to nature for example “Jellyfish clear as surgical gloves” and “ tide winded shells pacing quietly as shore runners”. These similes demonstrate how humans can not only understand but also be part of the natural rhythm. This is also seen in Judith’s poem, The Fox in a Tree Stump. Judith examines how the child feels a connection to the fox and its innocent nature stating, “ Fox hairs of dust sweated in my palms” although, this connection does not overpower the fear of her uncle, so she kills the fox. This demonstrates that although humans may feel connected to nature although this does not prevent them from destroying aspects of nature.     Harwood’s two part poem ‘Father and Child’ connects the two ideas of growth from innocence to experience and the confrontation with mortality. In both parts of the poem, the speaker’s transition from childhood to adulthood is evident as he/she is forced to face the reality of death. In ‘Barn owl’, Harwood presents the child as innocent because he/she is unaware of the consequences of killing of the barn owl. Hoddinott’s view that the child’s cruelty is a part of “the complex journey through the adult world of experience” provides a valuable insight into these key ideas because it is through the confrontation with death that the child gains experience and understanding. The speaker’s confidence at the beginning of ‘Barn Owl’ is signified because the owl is initially objectified as the speaker’s “prize”. This metaphor facilitates the speaker’s act of killing the owl, as it significantly diminishes its importance. After the killing, the tone becomes regretful in the line “I watched afraid by the fallen gun, a lonely child” to illustrate the child’s understanding of the enormity of the death. The emotive language reinforces that the child is solitary and responsible for the action. This is highlighted through the use of rhyme in “I saw those eyes that did not see mirror my cruelty” which highlights the complexity of the child’s journey into adulthood. Hence, Hoddinott’s view is clearly evident as once the child kills the owl, he/she begins to understand the complexity of death which is an inevitable part of life. Therefore, Harwood’s ‘Barn Owl’ has permitted me to synthesise the ideas of gaining understanding through the confrontation with mortality.…
