Have you ever wondered why we love m&m’s so much? ... They taste great! They're superior to ordinary, tasteless candy. But…What are they?
This is the common reply to all who are given the delicious chocolate m&m's. M&M's are by far the finest chocolate that has been made, coated within a little shell, then colored and finally imprinted with the letter “M”. Since their introduction in 1941 as a treat for the military, M&M’s have become a popular candy for everyone to enjoy. The name is an abbreviation for their creators, Forrest Mars and Bruce Murrie.
M&M’s started its gigantic universal recognition in a small kitchen by Forrest Mars Sr., all he had were a few utensils and a small oven.
According to Charlotte Kuchinsky, in her 2007 article Interesting Facts About One of Americas Favorite Candies, …. Forrest Mars came up with the idea of m&m’s during the Spanish Civil War.
Forrest Mars Sr. noticed that little was there to make the soilders time bearable, as little as a chocolate shaped pebble!
Forrest Mars Sr. noticed that these little miracle pebbles were fun and convenient to eat and easy to carry around, he also noticed that its significance was due to its hard sugar coating over the chocolate which kept it from melting, back then they were also packed in cardboard tubes as stated by Inventor of the week, article.
Inspired by this revelation he fought along his curiosity back to his kitchen and there he created what we now know; the “M&M’s” Plain Chocolate Candies.
Consequently, in the late 40’s they were given a memorable acceptance in the US market then they were transformed from the cardboard tube package to the form we now know; the brown bags.
The brown bag dint change much over the years until 2003.
During WWII, production of M&Ms skyrocketed due to the fact that they were sold to the military and included as part of United States’ soldier’s supplies.
