"She lay awake, gazing upon the debris that cluttered their matrimonial trail. Not an image left standing along the way. Anything like flowers had long ago been drowned in the salty stream that had been pressed from her heart. Her tears, her sweat, her blood. She had brought love to the union and he had brought a longing after the flesh. Two months after the wedding, he had given her the first brutal beating. She had the memory of his numerous trips to Orlando with all of his wages when he had returned to her penniless, even before the first year had passed. She was young and soft then, but now she thought of her knotty, muscles limbs, her harsh knuckly hands, and drew herself up into an unhappy little ball in the middle of the big feather bed. Too late now to hope for love, even if it were not Bertha it would be someone else. This case differed from the others only in that she was bolder than the others. Too late for everything except her little home. She had built it for her old days, and planted one by one the trees and flowers there. It was lovely to her, lovely." (Hurston 680).…

The fairy tale Beauty and the Beast opens with the characters of a rich merchant and his six children, three boys and three girls. "The two eldest girls were vain of their wealth and position" (22), but the youngest girl, the prettiest of the three, had a more pleasing personality, humble and considerate. This youngest daughter was so beautiful even as a child that everyone called her Little Beauty. She was just as lovely as she grew up so that she was never called by any other name, a fact that made her sisters extremely jealous. All three girls had numerous marriage proposals - the two eldest always turned their suitors away with the declaration that they had no intentions of marrying anyone less than a duke or an earl. Beauty too always turned her proposals down, but with kindness, answering that she thought herself too young and would rather live some years longer with her father.…

In William Goldman's “The Princess Bride”, the representation of love and marriage has challenged my values, through the unidealised reasons to why couples get married, the long-term unromantic relationship between Buttercup’s parents and the rather fast development of Buttercup and Westley’s love.…

In this narrative poem The Lady of Shalott imprudently makes decisions that will later cost her, her life. Four gray towers and four gray walls embower the Lady of Shalott, who cannot look down on Camelot or a curse is put upon her. In her mirror she gazes at a striking red-cross knight and foolishly believes to have fallen in love. This knight had no idea of her existence and he too was love crazed for another woman. The Lady of Shalott was content dwelling within the castle walls and weaving vivid tapestry. The Lady of Shalott neglects to realize that what she feels is a forbidden love and that love at first sight is impossible. The tragic and ironic theme of love causes the Lady of Shalott to make foolish decisions.…

    Bride Song Analysis

    • 4 Pages

Three major poetic devices used in the poem were symbolism, repetition, and rhyme scheme. One example of symbolism in the poem is “Now these are poppies in her locks,/ White poppies she must wear” (25-26). The white poppies worn by the bride are a symbol of “pure death”, meaning when the bride died, she was pure of heart. The poppies could also symbolize “eternal sleep”, implying that rather than seeing death as ‘the end’, she (the author) saw it as rest, a sort of dreamless sleep, an escape from her lonesome life. There are several examples of repetition in the poem, the repetition of the word “crown” in stanzas four and six {“We think her white brows often ached/ Beneath her crown” (38-39) and also “Lo we who love weep not today/ But crown her royal head” (55-56)} show great admiration and respect for the bride. This is also shown by the metaphor in which the author refers to the bride as “The enchanted princess” (7). The rhyme scheme is carried out through each stanza; however it changes slightly in the second and sixth stanzas. The overall rhyming of the poem tends to give it the effect of a song, which ties in with the title “Bride Song”.…
