YouTube LLC: Going Global by Acting Local
1. Do a SWOT analysis of YouTube in India. Strengths: The site is user-friendly and uploading videos is simple. They enable fans content and users with whom they can connect. Weaknesses: Copyrighted material is allowed to be uploaded to the site. While there are some Indian languages on the site, the main language is still English. Opportunities: There may be a way to join forces with various Indian TV networks that would attract more local viewers. After a period of growth, they could sell custom advertising. Threats: India’s local music labels may sue YouTube. Various Indian portals that aim to provide local content to their users.

2. Assess YouTube’s growth through alliances and partnerships. YouTube had many deals with global content providers, but specifically in India, they had made deals with Eros Entertainment, the International Indian Film Academy, India TV, and many other Indian companies to offer the most local entertainment they could find.

3. Assess the company’s localizing strategy. Do you recommend that YouTube “localize” when entering other countries? In India, YouTube provided a larger platform in which to share more relevant content about the country’s unique and diverse culture and lifestyle. While English was to be the main language, they also are expanding to include some of the local Indian languages. Localizing the site to be of better use to the area seems like something obvious a company should expect to do in order to remain viable in a new market. Different countries and locales have different interests, and if you ignore those interests, the failure of the company seems imminent.

4. What are the problems YouTube is experiencing in India? While YouTube had gained a good following, it faced problems such as being sued by the local music labels for displaying their content without permission. Also, YouTube is facing

    A big problem YouTube were facing during its rise in popularity was that the number of developers went up by two but the number of videos being watched went up as Mike tells us in the YouTube vid ‘9 orders of magnitude’. In the video Mike also describes a fatal mistake he had made when coding the interface between the servlet and template layer he used a dictionary which is a bad idea. Like a lot of programming errors this was a lot harder to fix later on in the project as opposed to the early life of the program. Other problems Mike describes is splitting the entire project into components, you want to be able to swap components in and out. There’s not going to be one individual or programmer who will know the whole bulk of the code inside out, having so many people working on a particular project can become difficult to organize. This is all about good software design but it is important that components work with each other. The majority of YouTube was initially coded with python and as Mike points out when we watch a video it still executes primarily through this. ‘It’s about what not to do in python ’ he states later on in the video suggesting throughout the years there has been a lot of trial and error in the solving of some problems. The year 2010 saw the global economy begin to recover from a steep decline which in turn saw a rebound in consumer spend, advertising spend and most importantly E&M spend worldwide. Advertisement in particular staged a remarkable comeback in nearly all markets. The world in general continued its shift towards ‘digital’ though the magnitude of change was different in many markets. India recorded one of the highest growth rates in the world at 11.2% in 2010. Yet, this was lower than projected, largely due to the negative growth in the film segment, with all the other segments growing as projected. E&M revenues in India continue to be largely non-digital with TV, print and film constituting almost 90% of the sector. While consumer preference continues to change, the shift to digital is hindered by poor infrastructure as well as affordability of broadband and mobile. Our forecast period does not show a dramatic change. However, just because the change is not aggressive does not mean digital revenues will remain irrelevant. We continue to believe that this situation is temporary and once infrastructure is in place, change will be rapid. The industry needs to use this time to prepare for the digital world. In this edition, we also present our views on the elements of the digital enterprise of the future.
