Surprising Facts about Leaders
What are the four insights regarding leaders?
1) leaders come in more varieties than crayons in the deluxe box. There is not a single set of qualities to be found in all leaders at all times 2) leaders do not necessarily prove their leadership abilities at an early age or demonstrate leadership qualities in all areas of their lives 3) some leaders prefer to avoid the spotlight in order to support the group as a servant leader 4) leaders often rise to the occasion and thereafter return to the role of follower. No one leads at all times and in all circumstances
What did the study by Bennis and Nunus (1985) reveal about a common set of qualities found in leaders? (page 114)
“there was a great amount of diversity among the leaders…most were very ordinary in appearance, personality, and general behavior”

In the movie, The Hobbit, Thorin showed examples of leadership. Thorin exerted his leadership by fighting the pale orc that beheaded his father in battle. The leaders did not identify any specific leadership character traits, or skills that lead them to their current positions. They believed that by constantly challenging themselves, and looking back at their life stories, they uncovered their real purpose for leadership. When looking back at their lives, they realized that leadership was not about success or the various perks that come with success, but rather about elevating other people and empowering them to lead. All people could be generalized as either leaders or followers, but there are also two types of leaders, those who lead to serve themselves, and those who lead to serve others. Leaders who lead to serve themselves, never find their true north, and never make the transition from “I” to “We”. Therefore they rarely gain the respect and trust of their…

One might say the term leadership demonstrates qualities like commanding, direct, bold, and courageous while others think of servant leaders who give to the community and stay in the shadows. A stereotype associated with a leader is someone who orders people around while yelling or doing other things in a bold manner. After reading this book, you will learn that that stereotype is not completely accurate because we tend to forget the leaders who instead of boldly direct people, stay in the background and let their pupils take the jump at the situations using their own personal skills. These are just two forms of leadership that are used in the book and in everyday life. This symbolism plays a large role throughout the book, enabling us to look at leaders in…
