Overview of Livestock in Pakistan * Livestock plays an important role in the economy of Pakistan and in the rural socio-economic system * 30-40% of income of more than 35 million rural population comes from livestock production activities * The livestock sector contributed 50% of the agriculture value added and 11% to National GDP in 2006-07 * Eight percent of total exports derived from livestock and livestock products * Pakistan possesses some of the finest dairy breeds like Nili-Ravi and Kundi buffaloes, and Red Sindhi & Sahiwal cattle, > 30 small ruminant breeds * Fifth largest milk producing country

Future Development in the Industry * A number of initiatives have been taken by the government to promote this industry – * including :
Duty free import of agro based machinery etc * Provision of veterinary health coverage by livestock dept. * Establishment of beef and mutton fattening farms , slaughter houses in private sector Milk collection ,Processing and Dairy Production Development Programs (LDDB -15%financial assistance) * National Poultry and Fisheries Development Policy * EU –GOP “ Strengthening of Livestock Services in Pakistan (RP , PPR , Training of VETS, VET Asst , livestock farmers and women) * Prime Minister’s Special Initiative for Livestock * Many other public/ private sector initiatives

    With around 56.7 of worlds buffaloes, 12.5 cattle, 1.5 pigs and 3.1 poultry, India has the largest livestock sector in the world. Animal husbandry, being an integral part of the Gross Domestic Product, comprised 4 of the GDP and 26 of the agricultural GDP. Generating outputs worth Livestock Rs 2075 billion (at 2004-05 prices) in 2010-11, the total output worth was higher than the value of food grains. Livestock sector plays an important role in socio-economic development of rural households. Over the last two decades, livestock sector has grown at an annual rate of 5.6 percent, which is higher than the growth of agricultural sector (3.3 percent). The share of livestock in GDP also declined but not as steep as the share of agricultural sector. It remained between 5-6 until 2000-01 and then gradually declined to 3.9 in 2010-11. Nonetheless, the share of livestock in the agricultural GDP improved consistently from 15 in 1981-82 to 26 in 2010-11.The Livestock Insurance Scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme under which the crossbred and high yielding cattle and buffaloes are being insured at maximum of their current market price. The premium of the insurance is subsidized to the tune of 50. The entire cost of the subsidy is being borne by the Central Government. The benefit of subsidy is being provided to a maximum of 2 animals per beneficiary for a policy of maximum of three years. The scheme is being implemented in all states except Goa through the State Livestock Development Boards of respective states. The scheme is proposed to be extended to 100 old districts covered during pilot period and more species of livestock including indigenous cattle, yak mithun. The Livestock Insurance Scheme has been formulated with the twin objective of providing protection mechanism to the farmers and cattle keepers against any eventual loss of their animals due to death and to demonstrate the benefit of the insurance of livestock to the people. Milk production in Bangladesh has increased during the past two decades. Improvement of high yielding crossbreed dairy and veterinary facility are the cogent factors for this partial success.     Milk and its products provide nearly one third of world’s intake of animal protein (FAO, 1998). Milk and milk products represent 27% of total household expenditures on food items in Pakistan. Per capita availability of milk in Pakistan is 82.4 kg per annum. About 80 thousand tons of dry milk, worth rupees 1213.5 million, was imported to Pakistan during 1999-2000 to meet local demands of milk. Small herd, poor genetic potential of animals for milk, low quality feeds, high risks of epidemics, improper marketing channels, lack of technical man power for dairy industry, high environmental stress, reproductive failure and high udder abnormalities, lack of commercial rations, orthodox management practices and poor extension services are the major constraints of dairy sector in Pakistan. The buffalo is the main dairy animal in Pakistan that accounts for roughly 75% of all milk produced in the country. The milk production in excess during winter and less during summer months causes many problems in its marketing. Pacca dodhis (milk suppliers) supply their milk to collection center or milk shops, usually after decreaming. Peri urban milk producers usually sell their product directly to consumers, milk shops and to larger establishments through contracts. If the pacca dodhis sell their milk to decreamer or hire his services, the milk is separated into cream and skim milk. The skim milk is mixed with other whole milk and sold to urban milk shops. The producer appears not to receive a premium for summer milk or for milk with higher milk fat content except for that paid by the milk collection centers that are operated by processors.
