What is the Arab Spring?
• Arab Spring is the term popularly applied to the series of revolutionary activities that have swept the Middle East and North Africa since December 2010. • It has led to the overthrow of dictators, massive protests, and a general sense of civil unrest as countries have united for democratic change.

•The largest protests have occurred on what are called a “Day of Rage” which usually occurs on Friday after the Muslim noon prayers

Who is leading the Arab Spring?
• Many of the uprisings began due to the organization of young people. • Used social media such as Facebook, twitter, and youtube to organize the rallies and protests. – Many governments tried to censor this by shutting down internet communication

•A major slogan of the people has been “the people want to bring down the regime” “Ash-sha`b yurid isqat an-nizam”

Why are the people upset?
• There are a lot of different reasons for the uprisings, but some common themes in these countries include: 1.Unemployment 2.Inflation 3.Political freedoms (speech, censorship, etc…) 4.Authoritarian rulers 5.Women’s rights 6.Education

Where is the Arab Spring happening?
• The Arab Spring includes countries throughout the Middle East and across north Africa. • It began in Tunisia in December 2010 and has toppled regimes in Tunisia, Yemen, Egypt, and Libya • Has also led to civil wars and violence in Bahrain, Syria, Algeria, and others.

• Began in Tunisia after the self-immolation of a protester of police abuses in December 2010 • Quickly spread across N. Africa into Middle East
