WORKSHEET – UNIT 1

Task 1 – List 5 qualities that a ‘good’ teacher should have and give reasons for your choices. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why?

1. Kind & Patient. A kind and patient teacher helps to maintain and develop both motivation and the student – teacher relationship. A teacher that has the patience to help with what some others may call a simple question earns respect and builds their reputation, which in turn helps to maintain motivation to classes and makes others students know that asking what they may think is a stupid question, will be treated with kindness and respect. A kind and patient teacher will acknowledge student weaknesses and take the time to assist them where necessary.
2. Good knowledge of the subject. A teacher with a good knowledge of the subject matter can teach better as they are the specialist in the classroom. Questions can be answered immediately and without reference to a textbook, and this gives the students more confidence in the teacher and this helps to maintain motivation and a confidence in what is being taught.
3. Lively and entertaining. A lively and entertaining teacher grabs and maintains the attention of the class, and makes learning a fun experience whilst maintaining or improving motivation. If the teacher is dull and boring the class will not pay attention to what is being taught and this will also reduce motivation. A lively and entertaining lesson engages and involves students, and makes it easier for them to become participants in the lesson rather than a spectator.
4. Passionate about teaching. A teacher that is passionate about teaching and enjoys the subject they are teaching makes for a better teacher as enthusiasm and emotion are contagious and will spread through the class.
5. Motivates learners. A good teacher that has all the above characteristics would be a good motivational teacher as they would be able to maintain and develop the motivation of

To enhance student learning, a teacher needs to create an environment of trust, sensitivity, and mutual respect for everyone. In order to establish a positive relationship with trust, an educator needs to demonstrate that he/she truly cares and respects each student by offering praise, being approachable, listen to students’ needs, and communicate well with students and parents. Once the relationship and safe environment have been achieved, students are more receptive to learning, which causes a chain of events to occur. Students are then able to concentrate better and are able to understand the material better, which means student learning is enhanced. Outstanding educators care about the whole child both academically and socially.…

    * The first characteristic necessary in being the ideal teacher is being involved. Teachers will become like second parents to many students in their career, so being involved is crucial. When you think of a teacher, many assume the only thing they can be involved in is standing in front of a classroom and giving homework, this is certainly not the case. For instance, teachers know they may be faced with a student who is having a hard time at home, such as being abused and in many cases have no-one else to turn to. The ideal teacher makes it a point to get involved so that any student feels confident enough that they can talk to their teacher. When I was in school I hit the age that I thought I knew everything and was getting into trouble, I look back now and thank god that I had some outstanding teachers who helped me through.…

Outstanding teachers are patient, compassionate, and understanding. Teachers need to be patient to deal with students asking the same questions over and over again or students who are too hyper for the classroom space. If a teacher has no patience they will most likely have high stress levels or possible heart attacks. Teachers also need to be compassionate in order to make students feel comfortable in the classroom. If a teacher isn't compassionate, the students will not feel okay with speaking their mind or participating in class.…

From the questionnaires and interviews I have conducted, I have found that there are many important qualities of an effective educator. The first teacher I interviewed, Mr. Richards thought control of the class was the most important quality, whereas the second teacher I interviewed thought control of the class wasn’t all that important but good knowledge and patience were most important. This shows that the subject you are teaching can have an impact on how effective your teaching skills are. For e.g. Mrs. Dean is an English teacher and she believes good knowledge and patience are important when teaching a class, and Mr. Richards is a Mathematics teacher and he believes that control of the class is a very important skill to have when teaching.…
