GKE Task 1 Part A:
Over the centuries there have been many different environmental and geographical factors that have shaped the development of the United States. Two of these factors that I feel are extremely significant to this development are the Irish Potato Famine and the discovery of gold in California. The Irish Potato Famine began in Ireland in September 1845. The famine was caused by an airborne fungus, phytophthora infetans, which attacks the leaves of the plant, turning them black, causing them to curl and rot, ultimately killing the plant. The rotting plant makes the perfect environment for the fungus to multiply. The wind then carries the fungus spores to more healthy plants. (Irish Potato Famine, 2000) This famine caused such dire conditions for the families. The main source of food and income withered away before their eyes. Since families could not make ends meet, half-a-million people were evicted from their homes. The landlords used a method of getting rid of their poor tenants by promising them food, money and prosperity in America. The families left with nowhere to go fell for the empty promises and migrated to America. The famine caused around 650,000 Irish emigrants to come to America in huge waves. 52,000 arrived in New York City in 1847 alone. (Irish Potato Famine, 2000) The California Gold Rush began in January 1848, when gold was discovered in the American River near present day Sacramento by James Marshall. News of this discovery traveled to New York City. In August 1848 the New York Herald announced the discovery, kicking off the migration west with dreams of striking in rich in California. By December 1949, San Francisco’s population jumped to 100,000. Prior to the Gold Rush, California’s population was 25,000, but by 1852 the total population was 223,856. This population growth ensured California’s incorporation into the United States of America as the 31st state and the first western state. As a result,

In my opinion, one of the many benefits of using spreadsheet to Fireball Technology company is it allows the company to carry out simple or complicated calculations using numerical data and formulae. The many functions Microsoft Excel provides such as tools to analyze and visualize data sets in accessible ways. If you have a set of data statistical, numerical or financial information, you can use a spreadsheet not only to store this data but also to manage it, perform analytical processing on it and present it. Spreadsheets provide complex processing in ways that even people with little technical experience can access.…

    How California Changed

During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s the gold rush had a great deal to do with the influx of immigrants and transplants coming from other states into the state and calling California their home. Prior to this, Native Americans and Mexican Americans had a heavy influence on the entire state. By 1850, the U.S. Navy started making plans for a west coast navy base at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The greatly increased population, along with the new wealth of gold, caused: roads, bridges, farms, mines, steamship lines, businesses, saloons, gambling houses, boarding houses, churches, schools, towns, mercury mines, and other components of a rich modern (1850) U.S. culture to be built. The sudden growth in population caused many more towns to be built throughout Northern, and later Southern, California and the few existing towns to be greatly expanded. The first cities started showing up as San Francisco and Sacramento exploded in population.…

This task will be related to Part 1: “Language in cultural context” specified in the topic of “Language and Identity” and how both (language and identity) are related to each other. In order to find the relation, the movie “The Freedom Writers” was studied. This film portrays the achievement of dreams, and how people living in the same place can express their language in different ways depending on their social and cultural history. The task was centered on how language is shaped by a cultural context, represented with a diary entry written from a character from the movie: Ben. He talks about his and his classmates’ experiences with Miss Erin as a teacher and how her life changed together with their own, and how social differences interfere in their social relationship. This diary is separated into different sections according to what he lives every day, talking in present tense. Along the diary there are quotes from the teacher and the students, used to emphasize the main theme of this task: language and culture. Through those quotes the teacher showed code switching, trying to get to know her students by their own language. Ben tells his story his personal point of view and sometimes he compares the teacher’s story to his own.…

For my written task 1 I have decided to write an opinion column based on the topic “Gender Inequality” to the public and the readers with the writing style of the author. I chose to write an opinion column from an article which talks about how woman are showed unimportant compared to men in advertisements. I chose to write on this topic because I feel that gender inequality is a major issue in the India. I have come across many situations where woman are treated very insignificant compared to men and I thought that writing about such an issue is a good thing. My main audience would be the public, especially targeted to women. I also feel that this topic ties with the “language and social relations” topic that we have covered in class. This column would explain how woman are seen as soft people and are considered to do very disciplined careers as woman in advertisements are always shown as cooks, nurses, doctors or teachers and men in a more complex path. This creates a gender stereotype in the economy for job recruitment. I think the learning outcomes from writing this column are good as well as it ‘demonstrates an awareness of how language and meaning are shaped with culture and context’. Like for example how gender inequality causes people to express language shaped in a different way because of the reasons of gender stereotype.…
