The North believed in a powerful national government, while the South believed in states’ rights. North was aided by protective tariffs that had been established back in the War of 1812, such as the Tariff of Abomination to help protect the new industries. Although it was effective for a while, tension increased when it began to hurt the south. Then in 1828, Congress passed a new tax on manufactured European goods to protect new American industries. This also hurt the south economically, because there were no tariffs for any agricultural products and they had to pay extra taxes. Abolition was the movement by blacks, whites, men, and women to end slavery. They used legislation, organizations, rebellions and printed articles/books to support their cause. After the Civil War, the South’s economy was devastated and was filled with angry whites who were frustrated over the emancipation of slavery. They wished to change the social status of African Americans and suppress them once again. The post-war South was in a state of chaos. In hopes to solve this problem, Lincoln established a Reconstruction Plan. Reconstruction was meant to tackle the issues through the re-admittance of southern states into the Union while rebuilding the south’s economy, and giving equality to the newly freed African Americans. However, Congress’ Reconstruction plan failed due to political disharmony between the Democrats and the Radical Republicans. The Democrats felt superior to African Americans and did not want them to have equal rights while the Radical Republicans wanted to eliminate the power of the former slaveholders, give African Americans full citizenship and the right to vote. Lastly, the plan failed because of the prejudice against blacks by Southern whites. Therefore, instead of the South ensuring the rights to the freedmen; they not only successfully disfranchised them, but placed them in a class based on inferiority and discrimination.…

The Presidential Reconstruction consisted of the president’s plan to bring the southern states back into the Union. It began with President Lincoln, who did not believe the southern states had legally severed ties with the Union. Lincoln created the “10% plan” that said a state could be readmitted to the Union if 10% of the state’s voters pledged allegiance to the Union. However, the Republicans in Congress did not feel 10% was enough and created their own plan called the Wade Davis bill to require at least 50% of voters to pledge their allegiance to the Union. Lincoln proposed the Ten-Percent Plan with a provision requiring the ex-confederate states to rewrite their constitution stating their allegiance to the United States. Those states can be admitted back if ten percent of its eligible voters pledged their loyalty to the Union. Included in Lincoln’s program was the Freedmen's Bureau. This program was a federal government agency organized to help the freed slaves and should operate for at least a year. The Bureau encouraged former plantation owners to rebuild their plantations. To the freed blacks, the agency helped them get jobs, and they were given food supplies and land. Included also in this program was the supervision in equality in labor and management so that blacks may be treated fairly.…
