Assignment Set - 1
Q1. Define “Statistics”. What are the functions of Statistics? Distinguish between Primary data and Secondary data.
Answer: Statistics: Statistics as a discipline is considered indispensable in almost all spheres of human knowledge. There is hardly any branch of study which does not use statistics. Scientific, social and economic studies use statistics in one form or another. These disciplines make-use of observations, facts and figures, enquiries and experiments etc. using statistics and statistical methods. Statistics studies almost all aspects in an enquiry. It mainly aims at simplifying the complexity of information collected in an enquiry. It presents data in asimplified form as to make them intelligible. It analyses data and facilitates drawal of conclusions.
Important functions of statistics:
Presents facts in simple form: Statistics presents facts and figures in a definite form. That makes the statement logical andconvincing than mere description. It condenses the whole mass of figures into a singlefigure. This makes the problem intelligible.
Reduces the Complexity of data: Statistics simplifies the complexity of data. The raw data are unintelligible. We make themsimple and intelligible by using different statistical measures. Some such commonly usedmeasures are graphs, averages, dispersions, skewness, kurtosis, correlation and regressionetc. These measures help in interpretation and drawing inferences. Therefore, statisticsenables to enlarge the horizon of one's knowledge.
Facilitates comparison: Comparison between different sets of observation is an important function of statistics. Comparison is necessary to draw conclusions as Professor Boddington rightly points out.” the object of statistics is to enable comparison between past and present results to ascertainthe reasons for changes, which have taken place and the effect of such changes in

Statistics is defined as the science of data. It involves collecting, classifying, summarizing, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting numerical information. (McClave, Benson, & Sincich, 2011, p. 3). . There are two different application process involved in statistics; descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics is the analysis that helps describe, summarize or show data in a way to allow patterns to emerge from the data. This can be captured numerically or graphically. Inferential statistics require the statistician to reach conclusions in way that extends beyond the immediate data alone, to draw an inference of the data.…

Statistics plays a big role in making big business decisions because businesses need to be able to create their business based off what would be able to bring them the most business based off what their customers are looking for. For example, my first job that I had working at a fast food restaurant while I was still in high school, and the manager would have to gather all our sales data to determine how our schedule will be for the following week. Another example of how statistics are used in business is when companies are looking to release a new product. They need to be able to analyze the needed information to then determine what would be the right sales price, product labeling, and when it would be the right time to release their new product as well. There are a lot of different types of statistics that are used all the time in all different types of business fields and many people really don’t realize it. Like when a business decides to make their store hours based off what will be able to meet the needs of their customers and be available during those…

Prior to assessing the curriculum for this course I anticipated the course would validate those perceptions and fears in the form of high level formulaic equations, and unfathomable theorems. To the contrary, statistics in part presents as a mechanism for analyzing a small sample of observations or a population in order to make sense of a broader slice of a particular group, population or system through the computation and numerical data. As comically articulated by Standard Deviants’ (n.d)., statistics appears to be more akin to a language test, as opposed to the structure, mythology and outcomes of a traditional math…
