Its basically about the Spanish South Carolina. first off the conflict in Europe between Protestant and the roman catholic churches led people wanting to create empires over seas. So Portugal and Spain both already had other empires but Portugal was kind of jealous because Spain's were more wealthy. So Spain's work labor was coming short (their work load were the Indians and they were getting sick and dying), so this Spanish dude named Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon wanted to find more. he decides to send agents explore the land just below the Bahamas island (he called island of Espanola). well the agents guy come back and was like look it's natives over there way bigger than these Caribbean natives. So the Ayllon guy go so himself and they trick the Indians on the boat and sail off (my teacher said the Ayllon man was against it and tried to return them, but that makes no sense when he was looking for work force in the beginning.) so they land and they are sold in slavery. on the way the ship wrecked and a lot of slaves dies anyway one of the slaves that lived, they name him Chicora (after what SC used to be called by them) he got saved and learned Spanish. So one day the Ayllon man took him to Spain and the whole Spaniard court was fascinated by his story he told of his native land-some true some not. so Charles V gave Ayllon a contract to get what is now Florida peninsula for Spain. he set out and after some time send ships for his scouts. he later found land and called it Santa Elena here he stayed because he saw black slaves, animals, and missionaries. another expedition land on what he called San de Guapodape or something like that but when land they lost a ship and everything on it. the Chicora slave left them to be with his family (because they are back at his native land now) and they found out that the swampy location is unhealthy for them (i think they are in the coastal zone which is low country like Charleston maybe the beach
