DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. FIVE PRIORITY SEQUENCING RULES ARE: First come, first served (FCFS); or First in, first out (FIFO): Jobs are sequenced in the order in which they arrive at the workstation. Earliest due date (EDD): Jobs are sequenced in the order in which they are due for delivery to the customer. Shortest processing time (SPT): Jobs are sequenced in order of the processing time required at the workstation, with the job requiring the least processing time at the workstation scheduled first. Longest processing time (LPT): Jobs are sequenced in order of the processing time required at the workstation, with the job requiring the longest processing time at the workstation scheduled first. Critical ratio (CR): Jobs are sequenced in order of increasing critical ratio (the ratio of time required by work left to be done to time left to do the work)

2. Johnson’s rule is used to sequence several jobs through two or three work centers.

6. The are a number of criteria for evaluating job sequencing rules. Criteria discussed in the text include: Average job completion time Average number of jobs in the system Average job lateness. Additional criteria include: average wait time, average total completion time, and variance in completion times.

    To improve the current workflow in the plant Shuzworld needs change the facility layout so that production is more efficient. In order to do this they need to balance the amount of time spent at each workstation so that each employee is maximizing their time. According to the information provided 48 units of work boots are required for each 8-hour shift. Each shift totals 480 minutes divided by 48 units is 10 minutes, which is the maximum amount of time each task (workstation) should take in order to meet production goals. Currently Shuzworld uses 8 workstations as follows: Task A requires 10 minutes, task B requires 6 minutes, task C requires 3 minutes, task D requires 8 minutes, task E requires 3 minutes, task F requires 4 minutes, task G requires 3 minutes, and task H requires 9 minutes. The predecessors for each task are also listed as follows: B and C follow A, D follows B and C, E and F follows D, G follows E and F, and H follows G. Based upon the previous calculation of a maximum of 10 minutes at each workstation Shuzworld should reorganize their workstations to come as close to the 10 minutes as possible while still being efficient. I found that the best way to organize the assembly line is to have 5 workstations. Workstation 1 includes task A and will take 10 minutes, workstation 2 includes tasks B and C and will take 9 minutes, workstation 3 includes task D and will take 8 minutes, workstation 4 includes tasks E, F, and G and will take 10 minutes, and workstation 5 includes task H and will take 9 minutes. This layout was determined using the assembly line balancing tool.…

    This article tells us about the takt time analysis and the Toyota production system. Throughout our lives we are slaves to time. In the manufacturing world, under the lights of lean production it is more demanding that the actual speed of the production line is exactly balanced to meet the demands of the customer. This speed or tempo of manufacturing is called Takt time. Takt time is derived from the word ‘clock cycle’. For a given product line the pace is determined by dividing the allowable time in the production shift by the average production volume. Work at each operation is planned according to the takt time. Anything faster is over production and slower is under production. Takt time along with along with flow production, pull system, and flow production form the basis for Just-in-time (JIT) system. The volume requirement changes of customers can affect Takt times. Organizations must acclimatize and adapt to the changing takt times. The use of takt times is not suitable for all types for all types of manufacturing systems. It works best in discrete part examples like the automotive manufacturing with some volume. Takt time also works best when the products going down the line have similar work content. Takt time is also important in terms of determining if things are ahead or behind in production during the shift. To implement takt time changes successfully requires some ability to move the work force around on monthly basis. When everything is slow workers are taken off line and put to work on improvement projects for a defined period of time. In tough economic times like this current global down turn things are pretty abnormal, and organizations should behave cautiously while taking any decisions regarding changes in the production…
