In the late 1700s to the early 1800s, the people of South and Central American colonies began to rebel against the oppressive Spanish regime. Most of the revolutions were successful, and thus began the freedom of many nations and equality for their people. But without the intelligent and powerful revolutionary leaders, the colonies wouldn’t have had the same success. One of the most well known leaders, Simon Bolivar emerged triumphant from his movement for freedom, granting independence to those who fought with him. But his successes and motivations didn’t develop overnight. They were fueled by many different aspects of Bolivar’s life, stemming from type of people that he met and heard about, to his need for glory.…

Like the victories of Boyaca and Carabobo, it also lead to independence from Spain. As the movie stated, “It guaranteed the independence of Ecuador. The Spanish surrendered 1,100 soldiers and all of their equipment.”(Simon Bolivar: The Liberator, 2000). Despite adversity after adversity and the collapse of many of the victories, he was able to do what no man could dream. Yet it wasn’t enough for him. He resigned all of his administrative posts. His greatest wish was for stability, peace and a good republican government, yet corruption and a lack of a united Latin America made him feel like a failure. Independence had not been successful and he was sick of the endless conflict that seemed to emerge. As he attempted to sail into exile for a third and final time, he died at Santa Marta at the age of 47 as a victim of tuberculosis. Perhaps what makes him truly the hero of Latin America is the fact that, despite many opportunities, he never enriched himself and truly put the countries needs ahead of his own. In a country that had been torn apart by greed in the past, he died virtually…

Even though most of Latin America became independent of European colonial rule in the 19c, what were some of the cultural influences and other ties that still existed between the two continents? Between 1810 and 1825, all the Spanish territories on the American mainland gain their sovereignty from Spain. Simultaneously, the power of the Catholic Church diminishes, including its patronage of the visual arts. During these war-torn years, cultural production declines. These years witness political reform and the beginnings of self-fashioned societies. Caudillos or military dictators initially fill the vacuum left by the break-up of colonial rule, including Juan Manuel de Rosas (1793–1877) in Argentina, Francisco Solano López (1827–1870) in Paraguay, and Juan José Flores (1800–1864) in Ecuador. Economically, there is a slow adaptation to the world economy. A growing awareness of the continent's enormous natural riches and economic potential lead technological development and an intense nationalism.…
