In a new study titled “The Mark of a Criminal Record,” sociologist Devah Pager investigates the link between possessing a criminal record and obtaining employment. Building on research conducted by Schwartz and Skolnick (1962), Pager specifically attempts to isolate the effect of the social stigma on criminality, which she terms the ‘credentialing’ aspect of the criminal justice system, using a comprehensive experiment that takes into account numerous entry-level job types and racial disparities. The ‘audit methodology’ used to conduct the study involved the use of four participants – a team of two similar black males and a team of two similar white men – who applied to a total of 350 employees. By alternating which member of each team presented…

I read the book Matched by Ally Condie. If I had to rate this book I would give it a ten because the story is just fantastic. It contains some different styles to balance the book. The book has a love story to it, a sad story, and filled with action. I also like it because it was a dystopian book. I loved The Hunger Games and this book is somewhat like that book. I personally even think it is better than The Hunger Games and that is hard to top. That is why I rate it a ten.…

Of Mice and Men is one of Steinbeck's eloquent ways of describing the harsh reality of the world he lives in is and for that reason is banned all over the world. Of mice and Men is one of many popularly banned classics, being censored in places from Ireland to Nebraska. Most of the banning of the book started in the 1970 and has continued for many different reasons. The book is filled with racism, swearing, sexsim, profanity, death and deprecating the american dream. The United States is a country that prides itself on its liberal ideals and lack of censorship, yet it censors Of Mice and Men simply to shield the children of this great nation from the harsh realities of the past.Of Mice and Men takes place in the early 1930’s, a time of great turmoil and depression for the American government and its citizens. During this time jobs were extremely hard to find, the whole country was suffering from debts they could not afford, Americans were giving up their dignity to try and feed their starving families and the ‘American dream’ was just that; a dream.…

Gaby Rodriguez, a 17 year old high school senior student from Washington was raised by a single mother and is the youngest of eight children. All of her older siblings and her mother were teen parents. Growing up, she learned what kind of person she wanted to be – pretty much nothing like her siblings. She was determined to break the stereotype of being a young Hispanic woman who came from a family where teenage pregnancy was the norm. Many of her siblings did not graduate high school and none of them had attended college. As a student who loved school, Gaby was in the top five percent of her graduating class. So when she decided to pretend she was pregnant for six months for her final senior research project, most of her siblings were disappointed that she had “ruined her life.” Gaby’s mother, her boyfriend Jorge, her sister Sonya, and her best friend Saida knew about her project, along with a couple of school administrators and experts who gave her advice on how to have a believable pregnancy. She writes, “My main goal was to make my peers take teen pregnancy seriously – if it could happen to me, it could happen to them – and encourage them to make responsible decisions about their bodies and sexuality.” I agree with that statement because it could happen to anyone if they don’t know how to take responsible decisions of themselves.…

    Up in the Air

In Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air a traveling businessman, Ryan Bingham, played by George Clooney, uses traveling as his way to escape reality. Bingham avoids all types of human relationships and isolates himself from his world . After getting to know a young uand–oming (connect those words with a -) co-worker at his firm, Natalie, he realizes there is more to life than sky miles, airports, and hotels. Because of this awakening and an epiphany at his sister’s wedding, he decides to pursue a romantic relationship with a woman he thinks he loves yet only to find out she has been deceiving him. Bingham tries to move on with his life and get back in the air, but the final scene portrays him as a sad and empty individual who finally realizes the extent of his self-imposed isolation. redundant The focus of the camera along with quick cuts and varying camera levels in the second scene portray how Bingham has successfully compartmentalized his life, leading to?? now that I think about it, is it, rather, than the compartmentalizing that he learns on his job leads to this in his life? Or just that he his able to compartmentalize and dislocate himself in all aspects of his life – work and love? I think you can hone this thesis more, but for now it’s fine the compartmentalization and dislocation of difficult emotions that result from his job so much so that he no longer knows how to unpack these compartments of his life and enjoy the pieces all put together.. Good, but now add a “so what?” – why does Reitman want to show this?…

    That Tally Stick

So many people have keepsakes to symbolize their love for one another. Couples have pictures and mementos to remind them of their special times. In “The Tally Stick”, Jarold Ramsey introduces us to a couple who use a tally stick rather than pictures to represent what is important in their lives. Ramsey takes us from the beginning of the relationship, when the stick is bare, to the end when it is carved end to end. We learn of the outside events that build their love, as well as internal measure, upon which their love is built. According to Ramsey the stick is a part of the couple’s relationship. The tally stick shows that love can be a long-lasting bond defined by failure and success that strengthen their relationship.…
