Through his professors at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Milken landed a summer job at Drexel Harriman Ripley, an old-line investment bank in 1969. After receiving his MBA, he joined Drexel as a director of low-grade bond research. In 1973, Drexel merged with Burnham and Company and formed Derxel Burnham. There, Michael Milken persuaded is boss, Tubby Burnham, to let him start a high-yield bond trading department. This operation soon earned 100% return on investment. By 1976, his income was estimated at $5 million a year. By the mid-1980s, Milken's network of high-yield bond buyers, notably Fred Carr's Executive Life Insurance Company and Tom Spiegel's Columbia Savings & Loan, had reached a size which enabled him to raise large amounts of money very quickly. It was said that Milken raised $1 billion for MCI Communications, then an upstart provider of long-distance telephone services, in the space of one hour on the telephone. Cable TV companies, like John Malone's Tele-Communications Inc., were also favorite clients, as were…

However, in 2006, as business landscapes were altering, the company’s newly appointed CEO, Jim Weddle, was presented with a challenge; to assess the company’s current strategic positioning in the industry and providing strategic tools to remain competitive. Firstly, Weddle must address the existing issue, as of 2006, in order to determine an appropriate solution for the firm. One of the major issues that challenge the firm is its inability to develop new talent while retaining the existing key employees via competitive compensation packages or providing incentives to harvest a productive work environment. In addition, the firm needs to adapt to the changing needs of the baby-boomer market while providing high quality services to all levels of income. Furthermore, the firm is struggling because traditional brokerages are stealing the larger clients which propel the firm’s key financial advisors to seek other professional opportunities. Taking all this into account, Weddle must evaluate the internal strengths and weaknesses of his company against external threats and opportunities to aid him in constructing a successful and sustainable business strategy for Edward Jones.…

Keith and I connected after he and a couple of his peers from the Lincoln Young Professionals Group gave a presentation on the importance of establishing a professional network in my BSAD 222 class. After this panel presentation I took a chance and establish a connection with Keith and I Ultimately chose to interview him for my informational interview. One of the main reason that I chose to interview Keith is due to the fact that I am interested in a career in the financial industry. As an accounting major, this was my chance to get a first hand experience and…

There is no doubt that Rob is a star in his position at Morgan Stanley. Businesswise, he has a proven track record and great support from his colleagues and clients. However, at the beginning of his career with the company, he needed to improve is skills in the firm’s management area. I agree with the position taken by Paul Nasr, not to promote him to managing director after his first year with the firm. I believe Rob’s self-evaluation was the best summary of the problems he was facing: on one side, he recognized his need to develop some soft skills but on the other side, his long-term career goal was not in line with the set of management and leading skills required by the table of professional positions.…
