Rig Veda
As with every religion, the significance of each event of the past, and the growth of tradition upholds great respect from believers and religious groups. Creation, both big and small, and the belief on how life came to light, is an important piece for many, if not all, religions in one form or another. The creation of the world is one of the many aspects of belief that is a defining component for different religions.
For example, the Rig-Veda passage provided in the textbook, reflects on how the world first came into existence. Another religious work, the Bible, also reflects on how the world was created. It is here where I will point out some similarities between the two.
Both describe a higher force, who created the world and everything that it holds. This also shows that both the Bible and Rig-Veda teach that there was nothing before the creation of world to speak of. In the textbook, the Rig-Veda states, “The creation came when the gods sacrifice Purusha, a primeval being who existed before the universe and brought the world with all its creatures and features into being” (Bentley and Ziegler 79). This can be compared to the Bible, Genesis 1:1-31, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.” Both religions credit their Gods, with the start of time and existence.
An additional similarity that I noticed was the belief of an eternal life in Heaven. The Rig-Veda mentions eternal life when speaking of all creatures having a spiritual connection to the Gods. The possibility of eternal life is also often taught throughout the Bible. For instance, John 3:16, ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (Eternal Life In Heaven).
