Reading Strategies Worksheet

Identify two reading goals, one short-term and one long-term.

 Long-term reading goal: Comprehend what I am reading while I am in College.
 Short-term reading goal: Comprehend what I am reading for my Foundations of University Studies class.

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

 How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course?

I give myself a couple of hours on Tuesday afternoons while my kids are napping to do the reading. If the discussion questions coincide with the reading I will answer them before I move onto a next chapter and next questions. If I haven’t done them on Tuesday afternoon I do them Tuesday night. I quite frequently reference the reading throughout the week to make sure I am answering any other questions and doing the assignments correctly. That also helps me remember what I’ve read.

 How might you incorporate three of the suggestions covered this week into your study time?

1.) Read through the document and if necessary reread it to fully comprehend the entire thing.
2.) Make flash cards for any unknown words that may be important and have a friend or family member quiz you. Doing this over and over will help to keep the word in your head.
3.) Marking, such as; highlighting, underlining, and writing in the margins is a great way to study. I must make sure I’ve read it all the way through because everything can seem important at first, rereading helps put the entire section in perspective.

 How might this plan help you accomplish your reading goals?

It will help me comprehend the things that I do not know or am having trouble understanding in my long term and short term goals. Marking will help me find out what I need to study by showing me what’s important. Flash cards are also a great study guide for unknown terms that may be important. Reading an entire document and then rereading it will help me comprehend all of the material

    Taking Notes

In order to learn one must simply study the material that you need to learn. It seems so simple but if one does not like to study or take notes they will not do well in school. They just leave it at lectures and think they know it all already. They must study with a group, the more you learn in a group of classmates the better you will teach each other new styles of learning. By doing so they can learn by another student’s point of view. While in these group sessions it would be very effective if one pulls out notes from the lecture and adding them to flashcards to review as a group. One can turn that boring discussion into a game; if one gets the question correct, they quiz someone else with the flashcards. If one gets it wrong they add a penalty into the study session. While they are using the effective strategy of flashcards they are also memorizing new material. This strategy is more effective than just reading to memorize stuff. In order to have effective flashcards one must have good notes. While taking notes it is challenging when your instructor is teaching and one could be a slow writer and learner, so what one needs to do is turn the instructor’s lesson into their own words so that they can understand it. While taking notes change the color of your pen and don’t write in black or blue ink, instead write in colorful ink this helps to retain information by 50-80% (Nicole…
