Racial Diversity in Society Worksheet

Part I

Complete the following using the MySocLab Social Explorer Map: Income Inequality by Race (located on the student website) as a reference:

• Select 1 racial group from the list below:

o African American o Asian American o Arab American o Hispanic American/Latino o White/Caucasian

• Write a 150- to 300-word summary of the economic, social, and political standings of that group. Use additional resources if necessary, from the University Library or your textbooks. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

The African American population has been in the past socially segregated from their White counterparts. This is no longer the current situation but Scheafer, (2012) talks about resegragation and what that means is that patterns of segregation are emerging again due to White households moving and other options for schooling and in the latest analysis shows that racial isolation is increasing. Economically African Americans median household income according to the Pearson Learning solution map, in Philadelphia, PA in 2000 Cenus there was a some that were at or below the median income and very few that were above the median income. I took that as African Americans are still paid below their White counterparts. In political standings the African Americans have made a strong voice for themselves, during the civil rights movements they desegregated a nation and eventually many years later the first African American president.

Part II

Answer the following in 50 to 150 words each. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

What is racism? In what ways does racism affect diversity? o According to Schaefer (2012), racisim is the doctrine that one race is superior. A way that racism affect diversity is that the person that is racist thinks they are superior than that of other races which hinders them from seeing or dealing with people from oher races and what the other people have to offer.

How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations. Shaefer, (2012) has stated that when minority groups are asked about racial interactions today most depending on which group interacts with which group, each sees it different. There are more Hispanics than African Americans that see racial tension problems, there are more African Americans that feel their community is discriminated against.

Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not? o In some places there are social inequities based on race, it is common in the housing market. Scheafer, (2012) wrote of after Hurrican Katrina had made victims of everyone but if you were Black of limited means made it more difficult to reestablish their homes, when they would inquire about a home they would be given the run around and if a white person came they would get better treatment and an offer of a home.

What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society?

I think that a lot comes from the misconceptions and stereotypes that people believe instead of researching or actually getting to know someone. It also sometimes comes from racism from the older people in ones life, like their grandparents or parents because racism is taught not genecticlly coded in ones system.
