PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING

1. The main points are :
Kolb proposed the process of experiential learning composed on by ‘four adaptive learning modes’ which are : * Reflective observation * Abstract conceptualization * Concrete experience * Active experimentation
As per Kolb learning is defined as “the process whereby knowledge is created through transformation of experience”. This implies that the educators should use the learner’s personal beliefs and theories in a learning situation so that new and better ideas are generated among the learners. This also leads to development in the educational system which is more productive and effective.
When model executives react to a situation in the organisation by using their previous experience or mental notes and how their decision affects the individual, organisations, community as a whole or what lessons can be learned whether positive or negative is the development of reflective practice.
As per Raelin & Coghlan, a possibility of reframing experience is possible when refection opportunity is combined with work experience by restructuring the regular decisions taken by executives.
Knowles has extensively investigated the process of adult learning and presented the conceptual framework of adult learning process having six basic premises (these differentiate adults from children) with the help of Holton III and Swanson. Adults were differentiated from children due to following points: * experience they have * reasoning power * self-concept * eager to know * immediate application of their knowledge * passion and motivation to learn.
These authors use the psychological definition for describing adult learners, ‘psychologically we become adults when we arrive at a self-concept of being responsible for our own lives, of being self- directing’ as per given by Knowles.
Therefore, adult learning principles are an integral part of executive education programs as executives are experienced practitioners.

2. Evidence used to support author’s claim :
At the end in the passage it is clearly stated that: * Adult learning principles are taught in executive educational programs to executives as they have opportunity to apply their knowledge, are motivated to work by giving their 100 percent and readily accept changes in environment. * The ways of thinking suggested by the author Kolb are intentionally applied and tested in the executive’s decision making. * The ways of thinking provide a fundamental understanding to the executives in terms of applicability and their consequences in a particular organisation situation.
All of the above points prove that authors point are not just mere theory but applies in practical fields of learning as well provides fundamental learning to executives.

3. I Feel :
I am in favour of authors claim because I feel that the author Kolb has detailed understanding of human basic psychology and then came with ideas and theories of Experiential Learning Model (ELM). I agree with the idea he has for better education of using a learner’s personal belief and experience in a situation so that new ideas are generated especially for executive level of study. I can totally relate to his ideas as I have also just started with my studies at executive level i.e. my MBA in Global Financial Services and I believe that his theories of learning will also help me to study and work practically when I follow it myself.
