Nouns
Nouns
Definition: It is a word that names a person, a thing, a place or an idea. Grammatically, it is the head word of grammatical structure in which it functions.
Kinds of nouns: Common nouns name general places or things or ideas e.g., man, country, statute. Proper nouns name a particular person, place, or thing e.g., Michael Jordan, Indonesia, Statute of Liberty. Concrete nouns describe things that can be seen, heard, touched, smelled or tasted e.g., hat, hen, desk. Abstract nouns describe things that cannot be seen, touched, smelled, heard or tasted as emotions, feelings, or qualities e.g., love responsibility, justice, fear, etc.
Count and noncount nouns: Count nouns name things, places or people that you can count (two books, three boys, one school). Count nouns can be singular or plural. Noncount nouns name things that you cannot count (sunshine, oxygen, information). They never take plural form.
Nouns functions
1. It functions as a subject of verb (John loves Mary). 2. It functions as an object of verb-direct object (John loves Mary) indirect (John sent Mary some money). 3. It functions as an object of preposition (She took it from John). 4. It functions as a subjective complement after verb to be (John is the president), objective (They elected John president). 5. It functions as noun adjunct (John waited at the bus stop). 6. It functions as appositive (John, president of his club, gave a speech). 7. It functions as direct address (John, come here).
Forms of nouns
Singular (one bird, one street). Plural (two birds, three birds, two streets four streets). Most nouns can be pluralized by adding –s. –es are added to nouns ending in –sh, -ch, -ss, and –x (one dish vs. two dishes, one church vs. five churches, one class vs. two classes, one box vs. three boxes). If a noun ends in a consonant+ -y, change the “y” to “i” and add –es (one baby vs. two babies, one city vs. five cities). If –y is preceded by a vowel, add –s (one boy vs. seven boys, one day

In A&P, it is much more likely to find common nouns as opposed to proper nouns. Common nouns are all around us and make up a great amount of most sentences. For example, in the sentence “You never know for sure how girls' minds work (do you really think it's a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?)” (Updike, A&P), the common nouns would be “girls’”, “minds”, “bee”, and “glass jar”. These are all common words, or things, thus making them common nouns.…

In John Updike’s “A & P” Sammy, the main character of the story encounters three young girls who come into his grocery store. They are dressed for a day at the beach, not shopping. “The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs.” (Updike) Sammy goes on to say the girls are barefoot and in describing another of the girls says the straps on her swimsuit are down. Their apparel gives them some unintended attention. Lengel, the A & P manager, confronts the three girls, reminding them they are not at the beach. The girls try to defend themselves stating the reason they are in the store is to pick up one item for one of the girls’ mothers. Lengel does not care and tells the girls it does not matter why they are in the store but they need to be decent when they came in to do any sort of shopping. Sammy does not like the way Lengel made a scene and embarrassed the girls. He feels he must follow his heart and stand up for the three girls by quitting his job. In my life, exploring the option of homeschooling my three children, I feel there could be unintended negative consequences as well. Weighing the pros and cons of the decision is a heavy task, but in the end I must do what is right for my family despite outside obstacles, just as Sammy had to do what he felt was right. Sadly, doing what is right for you often times is rejected by main stream society and can therefore bring uphill challenges that accompany your decision.…

In this text, I find that gender, number, and case are marked. Gender is marked as masculine, feminine and neuter. For example, ‘medi-o-que’ means and in the middle where middle is a masculine word. Number is marked as singular and plural. Latin has case distinction, in which six kinds of cases are included. They are nominative case, genitive case, dative case, accusative case, ablative case, and vocative case separately. In detail, the nominative is used to indicate the subject of a finite verb, for example, ‘Qu-is’ in the text represent the nominative case. The genitive case is used when one noun modifies another and is often used to show ownership, like ‘de-orum’ means ‘of the god’. Dative case is used to indicate a noun which is indirectly affected by the verb, such as ‘nobis’ means ‘from us’ in the text. Accusative case indicates an indirect object similar to dative case, like ‘te’ means ‘you’ in Latin. Ablative case is referred to as the adverbial case because it is used to modify a verb by place, time, and so on, like ‘aequor-e’ means ‘of the ocean’. Finally, vocative case represent names are being addressed directly, ‘Palinur-e’ for instance. Since all cases are marked at the end of the word in the text, they are represented as suffix. For example, ‘Qu-is’ includes suffix ‘-is’.…
