Effective management of health and safety: is vital to employee well-being has a role to play in enhancing the reputation of businesses and helping them achieve high-performance teams is financially beneficial to business

Health– the protection of the bodies and minds of people from illness resulting from the materials, processes or procedures used in the workplace.

Safety– the protection of people from physical injury.

Ill health- the two words are normally used together to indicate concern for the physical and mental well-being of the individual at the place of work.

Welfare– the provision of facilities to maintain the health and well-being of individuals at the workplace. e.g. washing and sanitation arrangements, the provision of drinking water, heating, lighting, and accommodation for clothing, seating (when required by the work activity), eating and rest rooms, first aid arrangements.

Occupational or work-related ill-health – is concerned with those illnesses or physical and mental disorders that are either caused or triggered by workplace activities. The time interval between exposure and the onset of the illness may be short (e.g. asthma attacks) or long (e.g. deafness or cancer).

Environmental protection– arrangements to cover those activities in the workplace which affect the environment (in the form of flora, fauna, water, air and soil) and, possibly, the health and safety of employees and others. Eg include waste disposal and atmospheric pollution.

Hazard–is the potential of a substance, activity or process to cause harm. Hazards take many forms including, for example, chemicals, electricity and working from a ladder. A hazard can be ranked relative to other hazards or to a possible level of danger.

Risk - likelihood of a substance, activity or process to cause harm. A risk can be reduced and the hazard controlled by good management.

    Threat, Risk, Hazard and Peril are all siblings of the same beast, if you will. A risk professional could refer to hazards as the contributing factor to a peril. Perils are the cause of the risk, such as a kitchen fire raging out of control. With cooking comes the threat of a fire, the hazard being the fire or source of fuel, the risk being the ever increasing chance of getting burned, making the peril out to be the actual act of being burned, in this case.     What is Health and Safety? Health:- The protection of people from illness resulting from exposure to hazardous substances and materials. Safety:- The protection of people from physical injury. The problems associated with the safety side has been known for many years for example guards have been required on dangerous machines since the 19th Century whist the knowledge of the effects to exposure from hazardous chemicals have been a much slower development Other definitions used in the field of Health and Safety include:Welfare:- Looking after peoples basic needs. Environment:- The surroundings in which an organisation operates including air, water, land , natural resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelationships (International Standards Organisation 1992) Accident:- An unwanted, unforeseen, unplanned event which results in a loss of some kind. Incident/Near Miss:- An unwanted, unforeseen, unplanned event that had the potential to result in a loss. Dangerous Occurrence:- A near miss with serious injury potential, specifically defined in Law (RIDDOR 1995) Occupational Health:- Includes any acute or chronic ill health caused by chemical or biological agents as well as adverse effects on mental health (Health and Safety Executive 2003) Acute:- Resulting from a single short term exposure producing an immediate effect which is usually reversible e.g. Alcohol affecting the nervous system.
