1.0 Introduction
Over the last two decades, nations, Uganda inclusive, have opened up their telecommunication sectors to other players, a step that has killed off government monopoly over the sector hence creating competition. The liberalization of the telecommunication industry in Uganda, first took place in the early to mid-1990’s as part of the broader Structural Adjustments and later on culminated into the opening up of the whole industry in 2006 when the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) was formed. This resulted from the need to modify the telecommunication industry.

The global telecommunications industry is the foremost provider of the global network: a vast, interconnected web of devices that puts individuals in touch with one another, whether by landline telephones, mobile telephones, or the Internet. Because the telecommunications industry is so integral to our society, it has seen significant growth throughout the past decade, growing at an average rate of 5% for the past five years. Currently, the industry generates an average of $1.5 trillion in revenue globally, and is projected to grow to $2.3 trillion over the next five years, at a rate of 8.2% per year. To better understand the industry, this report will focus on a few key factors: key economic drivers of the industry, threat of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers and consumers, and the industry concentration and fierceness of competition.…

Prior to the liberalization of the telecommunication sector of Ghana’s economy, the mobile telephony sector of the economy was non-existent. The only telecommunication service available to the populace was limited fixed lines provided by the Ghana Postal and Telecommunication Corporation (GP&T), which had a monopoly. The rate of access to phone in homes was 3 phones per 1,000 inhabitants and its distribution was skewed in favour of urban dwellers especially those in Accra. This led to the springing up of communication centers which charged ten times the rate of operators.…

This paper proposes a new estimation method of total cost and average cost curves and applies it to the telecommunications industry. The method is more flexible and entails less hassle for data collection than traditional methods. The results show that the longrun average cost (LRAC) curve is downward sloping, revealing the presence of economies of scale in production. The two largest Korean mobile network operators are realizing full economies of scale, while the smallest operator is not. Finally, the paper recommends three policy alternatives that the Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea can draw on to increase efficiency in the Korean mobile telecommunications market. & 2008 Elsevier Ltd.
