A specific, finite task to be accomplished. A problem with a known solution scheduled for completion. Projects are Unique and Non-routine activities Task: Set of activities comprising a Project
Work Packages: Division of Tasks Work Units: Division of Work Packages Project Management:
The science and art of achieving the Requirements within predetermined Time and Resource parameters.
Project Management Activities: Planning-Objectives Resources Work Break-down Structure Organization Scheduling- Project Activities, Start & End Times, Activity Network Controlling-Monitor, Compare, Revise, Action Work Breakdown Structure: WBS is a hierarchical decomposition of the project into phases, deliverables and work packages. 1.Project 2. Major Tasks in the project 3. Subtasks in the major tasks 4.Activities (or “work packages”) to be completed Project Controlling: Close monitoring of Resources, Costs, Quality, Budgets. Feedback enables revising the Project Plan and Shift Resources. Computerized tools produce extensive reports Six Steps PERT & CPM: 1. Define the Project and prepare the Work Breakdown Structure 2. Develop relationships among the activities - decide which activities must precede and which must follow others 3. Draw the network connecting all of the activities 4. Assign Time and/or Cost Estimates to each activity 5. Compute the longest time path through the network – this is called the Critical Path 6. Use the network to help Plan, Schedule, Monitor, and Control the project Perform a Critical Path Analysis: The Critical Path is the Longest Path Through the Network

The Critical Path is the Shortest Time in which the Project Can Be Completed. Any delay in Critical Path activities delays the project. Critical Path Activities have no slack time Variability in Activity Times: CPM assumes we know a fixed time estimate for each activity and there is no variability in activity times PERT uses a Probability Distribution for Activity Times to allow for Variability.

The Critical Path Method will indicate the longest path of planned to the end of the project. It is a very good tool to use because it will give the Project Manager a good idea of what tasks that must be completed on time in order for the project to continue smoothly. This method is commonly used in the development of new…

We gathered our information from a study conducted through surveys, and direct observation at INOVA hospital. INOVA hospital currently uses electronic medical record (EMR) system, however it is a first generation system, and lacks an integrated system through the hospital. Our findings showed this occurred because of early adoption of this technology and lack of planning when implementing the old system. In the old system, the departments are not connected to a central database. This creates the need to print medical records for transfer between departments, which causes errors, slow response time, increased cost, longer wait time, and redundancy of data.…

All companies are faced with completing projects, whether it is to make a product, complete a service or an outcome such as a research project. Project Management helps to ensure that the projects are done effectively and efficiently. Project management is the “application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to meet the project requirements.” (Project management body, 2008) There are 5 process groups associated including initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. Managing a project is complex, a Project manager needs to define and identify requirements, needs, concerns, and balance constraints such as recourses, schedules, budget and risks.…

    1. Critical Path Method and Critical Chain Project ManagementProject schedule plan is the main plan included in any Project Management Plan. Project schedule isresponsible for bringing project time, cost and quality under control. Project schedule links resources, tasks and time line together. Once a Project Manager has list of resources, work breakdown structure(WBS) and effort estimates, he is good to go for planning project schedule. Schedule networkanalysis helps Project Manager to prevent undesirable risks involved in the project. Critical PathMethod (CPM) and Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) are key elements of schedule networkanalysis. In the following sections we will explore these elements in details to understand theirimportance in keeping project on schedule to get increase in ROI.Critical Path Method (CPM):The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a schedule network analysis technique. CPM was developed by theDuPont Corporation in 1957.Critical path determines the shortest time to complete the project and itis the longest duration path through a network of tasks. Critical tasks (activities) are tasks (activities)on the critical path.To understand CPM further lets first understand nature of the task. According to PMBOK everyscheduled task can be defined by the following four parameters. • Early Start (ES): Earliest possible point in time on which a task can start. • Early Finish (EF): Earliest possible point in time on which a task can finish. • Late Start (ES): Latest possible point in time on which a task can start. • Late Finish (EF): Latest possible point in time on which a task can finish.Early Start and finish dates are calculated by means of Forward Pass and Late Start and Late Finishdates are calculated by means of Backward Pass. Many Tasks have some amount of buffer added to them referred as Slack Time or Float. Float time isamount of time a task can slip before it delays project schedule.…
