Med Net Case
Most likely Bishop and Yates have shown Mahria the following calculations to convince her to stay with MedNet over the Marvel:

Purchase Rate
Number of sales
Contr
Monthly Contribution
Cost per $contr
MedNet
6.00%
30,960
$150
$4,644,000
$0.37
Marvel
2.00%
15,960
$45
$718,200
$0.60
Newspaper
12.00%
4,440
$165
$732,600
$0.35

According to the table, MedNet is almost equal to the newspaper ad in terms of cost per one dollar of contribution. Marvel showed to be almost twice as expensive than MedNet.

Situation with cholesterol.com is far more complicated. Case contains no information on cholesterol.com ad effectiveness other than that most often niche type sites become first source for the newly diagnosed. However, survey says that 85% of broad audience visit 3 or more sites to research their condition. Taking into account high trustworthiness of the MedNet.com it is reasonable to expect that 85% of cholesterol.com users will also visit MedNet. Out of these 85%, 93% will visit MedNet again when medical information is needed. Therefore, roughly 80% of cholesterol.com visitors will either switch or become regular MedNet’s visitors. Generally speaking cholesterol.com will share almost all its visitor pool with MedNet.

I would advise Marhia to request sample ad effectiveness metrics from cholesterol.com. From the tone of the case it seems like cholesterol.com charges disproportionally high premiums for their not so obvious competitive advantage. Chances are that cholesterol.com will prove less effective than MedNet.

If cholesterol.com will prove to be more efficient and Windham will switch away from MedNet, the decision of future MedNet strategy will depend heavily on the competitive landscape and internal flexibility of the MedNet.

In the first option, from the survey we know that 75% of MedNet’s audience will switch away once charge is introduced, so if 25% agrees to pay we would need to charge approximately

Currently, hospitals are paid a flat fee per hospital case by the federal Medicare program, using the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS). The prospective payment price, also referred to as the DRG (Diagnosis Related Groups) payment, covers all hospital costs for treating the patient during a specific inpatient stay, including the costs of all devices that are used. CMS adjusts DRG payments annually to reflect changes in hospital costs and changes in technology. This fee is paid to the hospital based on the patient’s symptoms, age, sex, discharge status, and the presence of complications, but does not account for length of stay or how many hospital services are actually used. (Ellis, 2011) Over time, the attempt has been to keep these rates close to the average cost of providing the services per case, although many hospitals claim that often the case payments they receive are below their own full costs. The shift in healthcare consolidation is to one of systematic care. Products must add value not only to the patient and their unmet need but also to the unmet need of the system as a hole. There is an opportunity for pharmaceuticals to compete on a more complete value picture. As consolidated healthcare providers become responsible for episodes of care they may become less price sensitive CITATION Hea13 \l 1033 (Healthcare Economics Editorial Board, 2013). The price sensitivity is different for each disease, but understanding how this price sensitivity is relevant to the various areas of care will be critical for the pharmaceutical industry. Price sensitivity will be, in part, determined by the nature of the consolidation. Understanding these price sensitivities by category and attribute will allow pharmaceutical companies to build endpoints in clinical trials that create a proper value proposition for cost conscious consolidate healthcare provider networks.…

The amount of money that can be borrowed has many entities and factors that influence the capital budget of the hospital (Cleverly, Song, & Cleverly). The Allen Pavilion of NY Presbyterian Hospital (NYPH) is projecting that the purchase of an MRI machine for their facility will be a venture worth pursuing. The growth and demand of the small community of Inwood NY currently is transported or sent to other facilities or to the downtown campus Milstein. This increase in demand has taken over the capacity of what the Milstein campus can efficiently serve. The small community pavilion serving this neighborhood is an aging community. The majority of the patients cared for at the Allen are reimbursed via Medicare. MRI’s serve to assure better quality of care for the patients and is an important advanced technology that is needed for this aging population whom is informed and demand quality healthcare services. The patients cared for at the Allen Pavilion currently have to be sent downtown for MRI’s via cab, ambulance, and at the cost of the hospital.…
