PROJECT ASSINGMENT
In this assignment, you shall submit a report of your group project individually. You are expected to improve your group project with appropriate suggestion or recommendation. Refer to the attached the project brief for assignment for details. Cost Reduction Exercise

For motorcycle rear shock absorber
DESIGN FOR ASSEMBLY & DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE
There is a rear shock absorber of a motorcycle in the workshop with all functional components remained assembled. It is mechanical device to smooth the damp shock impulse and to dissipate the kinetic energy. The absorber major components are: collar with throttle arm, spring for absorber, upper joint, dampers, spring adjuster, spring guide, rear collar, rubber, bush, washer, nuts and bolts. 1. The Task

Your team task is to review the current model from the manufacturing & assembly aspects with the objective to reduce manufacturing cost & assembly cost. Often engineers are required to improve the components design for ease of manufacturing as well as ease of assembly them together. The overall aim of this exercise is to reduce costs and, where appropriate, improve or replace new design for the rear wheel assembly. Your review should clearly reference the design for assembly and design for manufacture methodologies. Your team should make improvement on design for manufacturing (DFM) aspect i.e. the new product should be easier and faster to be manufactured, which involves lesser processes. Design for assembly (DFA) aspect should also be incorporated as parts that are easier to assembly require less labour cost and fasteners. The rear absorber assembly should be dismantled and understand the assembly steps & fastening task involved. Next examine each functional components...
