he beginning of human life is the heart of the abortion debate. Why we never see pro-choice advocates, such like Planned Parenthood or NARAL, explaining where they believe life begins? Their most usual tactics is to shift the debate from whether abortion takes a human life to how "comprehensive sex education" and contraception can lower abortion rates. We are not debating the merits of different strategies to lower abortion rates, we are debating whether or not abortion takes human life, and one side almost never seriously addresses it. Maybe it's because people have a much easier time defending abortion when we don't talk about when life begins.
According to general scientific consensus, human life (in the sense at what point does an individual physical being comes into existence) starts at conception. This consensus is, for example, reflected in the Encyclopedia Britannica article:
“”Although organisms are often thought of only as adults, and reproduction is considered to be the formation of a new adult resembling the adult of the previous generation, a living organism, in reality, is an organism for its entire life cycle, from fertilized egg to adult, not for just one short part of that cycle.
—Encyclopedia Britannica 1998, v 26, p 611
Why is it this way? Concerning when life begins, a particular aggregate of hereditary tendencies (genes and chromosomes) is first assembled at the moment of fertilization when an ovum (egg) is invaded by a sperm cell. This restores the normal number of required chromosomes, 46, for survival, growth, and reproduction of a new composite individual. And we say that it is a human being, because...
This being is alive. The fertilized egg has the characteristics of life. He can reproduce his own cells and develop them into a specific pattern of maturity and function.
This being is human. He is a functioning individual organisms that genetically belong to the species

The zygote cell is the first stage of the embryo. The zygote contains DNA from both parents which create a unique new identity that has never existed. That is the start of a baby, therefore a pregnancy is not just the woman and her body; new life has already begun since the zygote has the four criteria needed to establish biological life which include growth, metabolism, reaction to a stimuli, and reproduction. About 22 days after conception the baby’s heart begins to circulate its own blood and a heartbeat can be detected and by six weeks that same baby has facial features and brain activity has begun. By after just 10 short weeks, still in the first trimester, the baby can…

Human life begins with conception. A fertile woman usually produces one egg cell each month, roughly two weeks after the last menstrual period. The egg cell travels from the ovary, along the fallopian tube towards the uterus. If sexual intercourse takes place while the egg is in the fallopian tube, there is a possibility of conception. Only half of all fertilised eggs develop to become babies. Many eggs are lost without a woman knowing that fertilisation ever happened.…

Foetal development- human life begins with conception. If sexual intercourse takes place while the egg is in the fallopian tube, there is a possibility of conception. Just one sperm may fertilise the egg. Fertilisation means that the genetic material in the egg to start a new life. Pregnancy then begins when a sperm penetrates an egg. One to one and a half days later, the single fertilised egg cell begins to divide. After two or three days there are enough new cells to make the fertilised egg the size of a pin head. This collection of cells travels to the lining of the uterus where is becomes anchored. The developing collection of cells is now called an embryo. After eight weeks, the embryo may have grown to between 3 and 4cm, has a recognisable heartbeat and the beginnings of eyes, ears, a mouth, legs and arms. At this stage the growing organism is called a foetus. During the remaining seven months before birth, the organs continue to develop. By 20 weeks, the foetus will have reached about half the length of the baby at birth. By 32 weeks, the foetus will be about half its birth weight.…

All my life I thought and believed that there consists of life in the womb before conception. Today, doctors and scientists claim that life starts after the baby comes out of the womb. Science claims that cells are the smallest units of living organisms. When the two units become joined together, a new cell, a living organism, forms. This contradicts the statement that life happens for the baby after the woman conceives.…

The pro-life view is characterized by “all men are created equal.” My personal view is that equal rights should be available to everyone regardless of sex, race, preference, age, etc. Throughout history there have been many conflicts of significance to women and blacks concerning the fight for equal rights; pro-life supporters say “why not babies too?” They also believe “there are no sub-humans.” Personally, I agree that there are no sub-humans. There are humans and not humans. I do not believe fetuses in a vegetative state, similar to a piece of tissue, are not humans because they are not conscious. Just because something has the potential of becoming a human in the future does not make it a human now (Planned Parenthood).…

Although this collection of cells begin to organize rapidly into the brain, nervous system, circulatory system, muscles, and skeletal structure, the appearance for many weeks is grotesque, not even resembling human form. The point at which I think the life can be considered human is when brain signals can be detected and the fetus has taken on a human appearance. This occurs around 12 weeks. Until this point I do not consider abortion to be the taking of a human life. However after 3 months, abortion, is not justified unless there was a great danger to the mother's life. In fact, this is the point at which the embryo (a swelling) changes its name to be a fetus (meaning young one or…

At the heart of the political debate about whether the federal government should sponsor and pay for the research of embryonic stem cell is the cultural and political idea of when human life begins. This question is the most important one in the process of either banning or allowing and funding the research. It is clear that murder is against both the moral/ethical and legal code in this country and in most others. The question of whether life begins at conception; a point of view taken by pro-life activists, or whether life begins later on in the process when the egg forms a sense of…

There are many differences between a “pro- choice” position on abortion and a “pro- life” position. People who are “pro- choice”, then they believe that it is the woman’s decision if she wants to have a child and carry it for nine months. If someone is “pro- life”, then they are against anyone getting an abortion. They believe that the fetus has the same rights as a human being. The argument the “pro- life” people strongly believe is that every undeveloped human is sacred and must be protected by the government. The “pro- choice” people argue that when a humans personhood cannot be proven in pregnancies, then the government does not have the right to prevent a woman her right to decide whether or not she wants to continue with the pregnancy.…
