Introduction
Xitang is a live ancient water town located in Jiashan County, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, China. With its more than one thousand years of history, this town became one of the most famous watery towns in Southern China, which is known as “Venice of the East”. As most of the well- preserved architectural groups constructed during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is the best place for people to relax for a few days and taste the simple and unsophisticated folkway. Xitang, like a typical Chinese southern girl, soft and serene, is waiting for more and more people to come and give them rousing memories.

Ancient China was located in the eastern part of Asia. As time went on, China expanded its borders to the north, south, and west. Today, China itself covers one-third of the continent of Asia. It is the third largest country in the world. China also has the world’s largest population. China shares borders with fourteen other countries. Major cities, which developed and grew along the Huang He, Chang Jiang, Wei and Luo rivers, served as political, financial, and economic centers of the dynasties. “The dynasty is a series of rulers in a particular kingdom or empire, and each ruler in the series is said to be a member of the same family”. In approximately 350 BCE, Xianyang became the capital of China. After the fall of the Qin Dynasty, a new capital was established at the city of Chang’an near present day Xi’an. Chang’an stayed the capital of China until the first century CE, even when the new emperor moved the capital. The new capital was established at the city of Luoyang, which was located in the center of China on the Wei River. Luoyang was the capital of China for many different dynasties, but by…

Da ming yi tong zhi (Gazetteer of the Unity of the Great Ming), a gazetteer which was completed in 1456, had already described Jiaxing as an affluent and prosperous area, where “all soil in the Wu region is supreme fertile. (Jiaxing has the most fertile land in the Wu region. Therefore, once Jiaxing has a good harvest, the Jianghuai region would be abundant; if Jiaxing has a bad year, the whole region must behave frugally.) It attracts people with the profit of fishery and salt… Residents are intelligent, gentle, and are substantially rich.” Generally speaking, an advantageous geographical location and the rich endowment of natural resources has made Jiaxing a wealthy town, which laid a foundation for its continuous growth of commerce and…

Both of the poets were unhappy in city and political life. Tao Qian describes his life in the city as falling “in the snares of dust” (Owen, 316), and shows the country as a paradise in comparison, where “No dust pollutes my doors or yard” (Owen, 316). Xie Lingyun has also had a life of difficulty in the city, “long unwell and deluged by sufferings” (Owen, 322).…

The Donghu are mentioned by Sima Qian as already existing in Inner Mongolia north of the state of Yan in 699-632 BC. Mentions in the Lost Book of Zhou (Yizhoushu) and the Shanhaijing indicate the Donghu were also active during the Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BC). The Mongolic-speaking Xianbei formed part of the Donghu confederation, but had earlier times of independence, as evidenced by a mention in the Guoyu ("晉語八" section) which states that during the reign of King Cheng of Zhou (reigned 1042–1021 BC) the Xianbei came to participate at a meeting of Zhou subject-lords at Qiyang (岐阳) (now Qishan County) but were only allowed to perform the fire ceremony under the supervision of Chu (楚), since they were not vassals by covenant (诸侯). The Xianbei chieftain was appointed joint guardian of the ritual torch along with Xiong Yi. These early Xianbei came from the nearby Zhukaigou culture (2200-1500BC) in the Ordos Desert where maternal DNA corresponds to Mongolic Daurs and Evenks (Tungusified Xianbei). The Zhukaigou Xianbei (part of the Ordos culture of Inner Mongolia and northern Shaanxi) had trade relations with the Shang dynasty (1600-1046BC). The Zhou clan lived near the Beidi (who included the Xianbei) for 14…
